B'vin sat down on a bench overlooking the Weyrlake. It was late, and he was tired, but he needed the fresh air after the horrible day he'd had. Plus, walking all the way down to the lake had taxed his leg, and he had to give it a rest before trying to walk back to his weyr. He didn't know what had been worse, the morning humiliation by J'darin yesterday, or the unwelcome companion in the form of M'tais at dinner tonight. All he did know was that he wanted to be alone. The blue weyrling didn't know the kind of mood B'vin was in, and so he smiled and sat down next to his friend when he saw him. "Good evening, B'vin! How's your leg?"

B'vin didn't respond right away. He had so much pent up anger and hostility in him at that moment, but he didn't want to take it out on D'cal. He had been the one person who had only ever been kind to him, and B'vin didn't need to repay that by lashing out at him. "D'cal, I'm not up for company right now, I've had a bad day and I just need to unwind." "Oh," the bluerider said, his smile faltering. "Of course. I understand. Are you sure you don't want to talk about it? Get it off your chest?"

"I...I don't know." he said uncertainly. Maybe it would help to talk, he wasn't very good at it, but sulking around the last few hours hadn't made him feel any better. "Do you ever just feel like quitting... like giving up?"

"Quitting?" D'cal asked quietly. What was B'vin getting at? "Quitting _what_?"

"I don't know," B'vin said unsure himself with what he meant. "Everything, everyone, I guess. Sometimes I just feel like getting on Serenth's back and flying to some deserted island and staying there, you know? Just me and Serenth." "Ah," D'cal said, breathing a sigh of relief. "Well, I suppose sometimes I've felt like that."

"Really?" he asked, looking over at the bluerider for some sign of sincerity. He hoped D'cal wasn't just humoring him, and that he actually understood what he was feeling. He didn't know if he could take more lies or pity right now. "Well, there have been a few times lately when I've thought that...
Well, that people are a little too much trouble." Especially females...

B'vin only nodded. They sat in silence for a few moments before he explained, "I took Serenth to be checked out by a dragonhealer the other day. She's got some scarring on her wing from her threadscore and I'm being taken out of my wing."

D'cal nodded. "The queen's wing is full of recovering riders, B'vin."

"Well she's not supposed to be recovering, she was supposed to be fine, a minor scoring... I'm the one who was supposed to be holding us back from fighting thread again!" He sighed, irritated at himself for not getting her seen sooner, but they had said she was fine... "And not only that, we're not even going to the queen's wing, J'darin has decided we're not even good enough for that! He's transferred us into the Weyrling wing!" "You're not _retired_." The weyrling knew that would have been even more of a crushing blow for the greenrider. "That's not the point!" B'vin said as he threw his hand up in the air, "I'm not assigned to a _fighting_ wing anymore. I'm going to be cleared soon (he hoped), and when I am, I want to fight thread again! If J'darin _had_ moved me to the queen's wing, at least Serenth could have still flamed thread. But no, he's decided it would be funnier to humiliate us by having Serenth and I become firestone flingers!"

"B'vin, calm down." D'cal put his arm around the greenrider's shoulder. "Trust me, as soon as you are ready to fight Thread again you will be in a wing. They need every dragon they can get in the skies! Not even J'darin is stupid enough to ground a flight-worthy pair at this point."

He wasn't sure if it was D'cal's sensible words or his supportive touch, but B'vin started to feel some of the tightness in his body start to slacken. "I hope you're right, D'cal, I really hope you're right."

D'cal gave his shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "Trust me. Serenth is going to be just fine. And you will recovered soon. And then, who knows. Maybe we'll be wingmates!"
