Lady Yanley

Yanley

The dragon had brought him here. He'd needed help getting down and then
moved out of the way, thinking. The rider had talked and he'd tried to
listen but there was so much to look at. He kept stopping and stumbling and
then he found himself deposited in front of a woman. Looking up, he realized
he still had apprentice knots. Still, a headwoman was always easy to
recognize anywhere. There was just something about them. And this one sorta
looked like the Lady Holder-sorta.

"Hello, are you a new candidate?" Yanley greeted with a welcoming smile.
With eggs on the Sands, the Weyr was getting new candidates everyday.

"Yes mam." He had a deathgrip on his carisak. "Apprentice Rohagelen from the
vintner hall."

"Welcome to Dragonsfall Weyr. I'm Yanley, one of the assistant headwomen. Do
you have the token the Searchrider gave you?" Yanley welcomed him and asked.

He'd almost forgotten in all the haste. Digging around in his pocket, he
produced a wooden piece that looked like a thin mark. He gave it to her,
hoping that was what she wanted. He dimly remembered something about a
search token.

"Thank you," Yanley gave it a brief look to make sure it was genuine before
dropping it in to her pocket. "Is that all your things?" she asked.

He shook his head, making the curls riot. Then he realized his manners and
spoke up. "Yes mam-that's all." As an apprentice he hadn't needed much
really.

"We need to check that you have everything needed. But first, we need to
record your personal information to Weyr's records," Yanley said and
gestured the boy to follow.

He'd already given his name and rank so he wondered what else she needed.
Quietly, he watched her, trying to guess if she was anything like his old
headwoman. She'd gotten him out of some fine problems indeed. "Okay...what
kind of information?

"Like birthdate, place of birth and parent's names and such," Yanley
replied. "We like to know who's living here, to keep track of people. How
else we know how much food we need to cook," Yanley grinned at him.

"Ummm My father's name is Arohin and my mother is Syngel. Was born at our
cothold near Marchos Hold. Was born in the seventh month on the 17th day
thirteen turns before." He hoped that answered all of her questions. It was
a lot to remember, really.

"Can't you wait until I got it written down?" Yanley pleaded and gestured
him inside to Headwoman's office. "Do you want to keep your crafting now
that you're here?" she asked after they had sat down and she had his
personal information down for the records.

"Maybe if I don't Impress yes." So his education didn't have to be a total
loss. Maybe he could be useful. The Weyr liked wine right? He looked unsure
but he followed her inside and waited patiently, looking around at the
walls.

"Good to hear. We can't offer the kind of extensive training like hall does,
but we do have few vintners. I can introduce you to them later. Right now,
your priority should be candidate classes," Yanley said and pulled a hide
from a pile. "Here's the schedule for a candidate."

He looked it over. Not much difference than an apprentice really. Maybe this
wouldn't be so bad. He smiled to himself and looked back at her. Now he
needed to know where he was supposed to go right? And who his teachers were?
He didn't know how that worked really.

"Now, do you have any questions before I give you a grand tour of the Weyr,
show you where the candidates sleep and leave you to the tender care of our
Weyrlingstaff?" Yanley asked.

That sounded scary. It was also probably a lot that he'd be expected to
remember. Sighing, he pulled his shoulders together and tried to act like
Symion would. "What do people usually ask?"

"Depends on people. What do I do if I get lost? -comes up pretty often,"
Yanley answered.

"Oh well...there's not much you can do besides ask where you are." He
shrugged, pretty used to that from when he'd first came to the hall. A
momentary pang for Amber Hills went through his mind. He missed his friends.
He missed his bunk. He missed his teachers. He'd have to learn everything
all over again. And he was new again. Everyone was ahead of him.

"That's very sensible attitude you have. You'll do fine here," Yanley said.
