Ciendra stepped in to the dining cavern, feeling rather strange. She
had finally gotten chance to change in her gather dress. Her hair was
done, shoes shined and the dragonrider's knots felt heavy on her slim
shoulders. She looked around. Usually, she was one of those who
scurried around with trays, making sure everyone had food and drink.
Now _she_ was one those people they celebrated today. A familiar girl
from the kitchen staff noticed her and came to congratulate. Her
obvious, sincere happiness for Ciendra was heart warming and gave her
confidence. More friends and acquaintances or unknowns swarmed her and
what felt like full candlemark, but was actually just a quarter,
people congratulated, hugged and shook hands. Even the Lord Holder
himself paid her visit. L'cor's father, she remembered, when she
curtsied to him. She could see where he got his charm. Finally she
managed to slip away to the sidelines and catch herself a glass of
juice. Her cheeks felt flushed. The Lord Holder himself! Had kissed
the back of her hand.
"Ciendra!" L'cor crossed the room with a big grin on his face.
"Congratulations, she's beautiful."
"L'cor!" she was delighted to see him. "Yes, she's amazing," her eyes
showed the enthralled rapture of recently Impressed.
He smiled down at her. He knew exactly what she was feeling tonight as
he had felt the same. "I saw Lord Corowal greeted you personally," he
nodded.
"Yes, he did," Ciendra sounded little breathless. "He said I was
another daughter of Emerald Falls Hold, making the Hold proud and
bringing honour."
"That's great," L'cor smiled. "You should be very very proud." His
father had told him much the same. There was one thing he hoped he'd
gotten from his father and that was his charm. "Would you like to
dance," he nodded towards the dance floor.
"I'm happy to, " she replied so quickly that she didn't realize she
couldn't really dance. "Except I can't dance," she blushed with
embarrassment. And she had promised a dance to P'ton too.
"Don't worry," he winked. "I do." He took her hand and led her to the
dance floor. "Just follow me," he said and placed one hand on her
waist. His mother had made very sure he was taught the things his
father wanted taught.
Ciendra nodded and let him lead. She trusted him without reservation
so following him was easy. Her heart soared and feet felt light.
Happiness made her giddy.
With the young rider in his arms, they twirled around the room and he
threaded them through the other couples without a mishap. Looking down
at her eyes he could tell she was glowing with her new found lifemate
and he was very happy for her. "You look lovely tonight Ciendra," he
said.
"Thank you. You look dashing yourself," she replied, blushing prettily
at the compliment.
"Aww," he winked at her and spun her out then brought her back in.
"Well one thing's for certain." he grinned down at her. "That old
auntie of yours can never tell you that no one loves you ever again."
"No, she can't," Ciendra said and then she stumbled, stepping on his
toes. "Oh, I'm sorry, L'cor."
"Don't worry," he smiled. "No harm done." She was small and light and
his boots protected his toes. "I could teach you more how to dance if
you like sometime."
"That would be good. Dragonriders seem to do lot of dancing," Ciendra
replied. Hey, any excuse to feel his arms around her was good. "They
certainly do it more than kitchen girls."
L'cor smiled and twirled her toward the refreshment table. "Alright
then, when you have some time between your weyrling lessons, we'll see
what we can arrange." He knew she'd be busy and dead tired most of the
time for the next few months. He turned to the refreshments as the
music ended and handed her a glass of punch. "Here you go.
Congratulations Ciendra, I'm so happy for you."
"Thank you." The day had certainly turned out like it was pulled directly
from her daydreams.
