"Yanley!" Genna said with a wide smile as she put down her plate next to
the Assistant Headwoman. "It's been ages since I've seen you, how have you
been? How's Daley?"
It really had been ages, Genna thought to her own regret. Life got so busy
with a growing gold dragon on your hands it was hard to keep up with
everyone you'd known before impressing. Sometimes that really bothered her.
"Genna, nice to see you. Daley's fine, growing and learning new skills
every day," Yanley replied. "He's grown so big that I had to leave him to
the creche while I work. How is Lissath. She must be nearing her full
growth by now?"
"That's so good to hear," Genna smiled. "I'm glad he's doing well. And
indeed, Lissath is turning out to be one of the bigger golds, too, so I
really have my work cut out for me." There was a hint of pride in her
voice, though, that showed she didn't mind all the hard work all that much.
"I'll bet you have," Yanley murmured with a grin. "So, have you started
your goldrider training yet?" she asked.
"Oh yes, quite some time ago," Genna smiled. "I like it. To be honest I
feel a bit spoilt sometimes, with all the personal training. But I know
it's for the good of everyone. After all it would be a shame if things went
wrong in the future because I messed up my records!"
"Faranth forbid that happening," Yanley said with teasing tone. "It's not
so much different than being a Lady Holder. You're responsible for all
those people and all those records. Daunting if you stop to think about
it," she was getting bit reminiscent.
"It really is," Genna nodded. "Luckily I'm just a weyrling now and only a
junior goldrider after graduation. I still have a lot of time to learn
before I get to mess up the really important stuff," she winked at Yanley
in good humor.
"Do you want to hear a secret? What to do if someone caughts you messing
up?" Yanley asked with conspiratory lowering her voice.
"Oh, please, do tell!" Genna said, leaning forward with a wicked little
grin on her face.
"Pretend you meant to do it," Yanley grinned. "I'm just testing if you
caught that," she continued with her most snobbish tone.
That got a hearty laugh from Genna. "Good one. I used to do that all the
time when I was a kid." she grinned cheekily at the memory. Her mother had
not been so fond of that trick. "I must have used it on you once or twice
too, I'm sure!"
"Yes, you have. And it doesn't really work if the other one knows it,"
Yanley winked.
"I guess I need to fine-tune my deceptions a little more," Genna chuckled.
"Let's hope I just don't mess up before then!"
"Don't worry about it. You'll do fine. You have a good upbringing and a
clever mind. What else a goldrider needs?" Yanley assured her.
"We'll see," Genna laughed, shrugging her worries away for the moment.
"What about you, are you training to take on more Headwomanly duties?"
Yanley sighed. She was tempted but..."Being a Headwoman is 24/7 -job and I
have a small child. I rather spend time with Daley. It's hard enough to
leave him to the creche for the candlemarks I do now."
"I can imagine," Genna nodded. "You know, you are lucky to have the choice.
So many women never get the chance to do much besides caring for their
children and many riders never have the option to do it even if they'd want
to. You get a bit of both." For a moment she wondered what it would be like
for her, if she ever had any kids. But she shook the thought away that very
instant. That wasn't something to worry about now.
"I know I'm lucky. Of course, if things had turned out as they were
supposed to, I would still be a Lady Holder, and Daley would be Golansin's
son, a heir to Hold. That just shows how you never know where life takes
you," Yanley replied.
"I can vouch for that sentiment!" Genna agreed wholeheartedly. If anyone
had told her back at the hold that she'd be a goldrider one day, she would
have laughed herself silly. "I guess things always turn out as they are
supposed to."
"I have absolutely no reason to complain how my life turned out," Yanley
said.
"Nor have I," Genna grinned as she finished her meal. "It was so nice
catching up with you, Yanley, but I'm afraid I have to run off again."
"Ah, yes, the busy goldrider's life. Be well, Genna and don't forget to
stop by," Yanley replied with understanding smile.
