It was time for lunch and classes had been dismissed, but Z'then hung
around the classroom until almost everyone was gone. Then he went up
to E'naer and cleared his throat softly. "Do you have a moment?"
"I always have a moment for my weyrling. What's up, Z'then?" E'naer
replied with a friendly smile.
Z'then looked around the room before he said anything. He didn't want
anyone to overhear. Especially not his brother.
"I'm having some trouble with lessons, and I could use some help with it."
"Alright, do want to do it in more private setting?" E'naer asked,
noticing his look around. Turns working with weyrlings had honed his
skills at reading body-language. "We can move to my office."
"Please," Z'then said hopefully. He didn't want to confess what he had
to where anyone knew.
E'naer nodded and led him to his office. He closed the door after him,
a sure sign he didn't want to be disturbed. "Take a seat, please," he
asked and took his own chair. Feral appeared, eyeing the weyrling
curiously and sniffing around incase someone had food.
Z'then did as ordered. "I think I'm afraid of flying," he blurted out.
He'd meant to stop there, but the words kept spilling free from him,
as though the dam had burst and the water no longer contained.
"The first flight on Juvath was okay, we didn't go too far. But now
we're supposed to be doing so much more, like formations, and we're
just staying up there, and it's so high. I'm really scared. I don't
think I'm ready for this."
E'naer gave him a sympathic smile. "Despite what you believe now, you
_are_ ready, Juvath wouldn't had chosen you otherwise," he assured.
"Dragons have never chosen wrong? Not ever?" His cothold accent was a
bit thicker due to nerves.
"Never. We may sometimes wonder about their choises but in the end
they prove to be right," E'naer said. "You have it inside you. You
just have to find it there, over come your fear. There's exercises for
this kind of thing," he continued.
"What do I have to do?" the brownrider asked.
"You get yourself accustomed to heights gradually. You and Juvath fly as
far up as you feel comfortable, then you go little bit higher and stay
there. Next time, you go little higher again and stay there little longer.
Eventually you find out that your comfort-height gets higher and higher,"
E'naer advised.
Z'then could see how it made sense. Getting used to the height so it
wasn't new and terrifying. It sounded like it would take awhile, though.
"When would we have time to practice?"
"I'm afraid you have to sacrifice some of your free time. Or join me
and Nerate, she has same problem than you," E'naer suggested.
That was who Ilyssia hadn't mentioned. The brownrider hesitated. He
didn't want to be seen at this... "Is it at a time when...y'know,
other people might...know?"
"We try to be discreet about it, so we pick times when normally no on is on
Weyr plateau," E'naer replied.
"That sounds good then. I'd like to join then, if that's okay." His innate
hesitation wouldn't be shaken though. "And maybe this will make me the
person Juvath thinks I am."
"You already are the person he thinks you are. He shares your mind, he
knows you better than you do," E'naer told him. He scribled down some times
to a hide and handed it to Z'then. "This is Nerate's practise schedule."
The brown weyrling took a look at the times. He could manage that.
"Thanks, Weyrlingmaster," he said seriously.
"Anytime," E'naer replied. "Don't worry your little problem too much, that
only makes it worse. You're not the first one nor the last one who feels
that way."
Z'then nodded. It made sense. Even if it was annoying. "I better get to
lunch, huh?"
"Yes, you need to eat. You need the energy," E'naer grinned at him.
"Alright, I'll see you at lectures then!" And Z'then left the office,
feeling better than he had all sevenday.
