"Excuse me, " Elona asked the tall harper. "Have you seen my son? He's three turns old, dark hair, cheeky smile. He's run off." He couldn't have gone far, but he could certainly get into mischief.

Nokala turned and surveyed the woman, considering the question. "Does he have a name then?" Children usually answered to their names when you shouted them, after all. Picking her head up, she was already scanning the area as far as she could see, used to finding children that scampered.

"Yes, Elonus," Elona replied. She stood on her toes trying to see him, but couldn't. Not even a hint of his shirt amongst the other people.

"And what was he wearing?" That would make it a lot easier to see him. There were a lot of brunettes running around, though most of them weren't that young. The Weyr was certainly good at breeding, that was for sure. She tried not to think that most of them might end up as thread fodder but she had seen the records. She knew.

"Uh - light brown shirt and dark brown short pants." The most practical colour for a boy who likes playing in dirt more than anything else.

That didn't help much but Nokala thought she saw a flicker of a small head disappearing through some people. Walking forward with her long legs in pursuit, she politely excused herself as she passed through the people, hoping that Elona was following. "Elonus?" she called as she pursued that bit of tunic she saw.

Elona trotted after her, trying to keep up. She wasn't ridiculously short by any means, but her stride was shorter. The fact that her eyes were darting left and right also served to slow her down. She couldn't see past the harper or she'd have seen her son turn his face, give a cheeky grin and keep darting off through the crowd.

And then harper instincts kicked in. "He think it's a game. Listen, you go to the right here and double back. I'll herd him that way, chasing. Then you can pick him up." Nokala looked over at her and jutted her chin up, hoping that she understood what she was saying. The child was allright though-she could see him easily.

"I'm sorry, he can be such a -" Elona hurried off to the right without finishing her sentence. The meaning was clear enough. He was an energetic three-turn old boy. Finally she spotted him, but his eyes were on the harper every time he glanced back.

Nokala kept calling his name, keeping his attention. It wasn't hard since she was so tall-it made her easy to focus on. And she was chasing him rather quickly. But she was pushing him towards his mother, which he hadn't realized. Meeting Elona's eyes when they got close, she nodded and then lunged playfully toward the boy.

Giggling, he jumped back and lost his balance, landing hard on his rear. He promptly burst into noisy tears. Luckily Elona was there to gather him up and swing him onto her hip. "Thank you," she mouthed, while patting his back soothingly.

"No problem, candidate." Smiling to herself, Nokala raised a hand to swipe at the tears and then swiftly hummed a few bars of a jaunty tune. "Never you mind lovely, it's okay."

Elonus stopped crying and stared at the harper with big eyes. He stuck his thumb in his mouth and sucked, almost along with the words.

When she was done, she stepped back and nodded to Elona. "From now on, I'd probably suggest teaching him about how important it is to hold hands. Make a game of it. Otherwise, he's more apt to get away every time." Little boys liked to get into things, certainly.

"I will, thank you." Elona didn't add that he'd probably run off anyway. It was his favourite pastime. "I appreciate your help."
