Description: Jaffra and Endoriel try to repair a damaged dress.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 5 of Turn 8
Endoriel inspected the hem of a gather-dress with critical eye. "How did she managed to rip it this badly?" she shook her head in dismay. The dress had large tear in lower left side. After the Turnover was past, she had expecting quiet spell in her craft. Instead she had been landed with unsually large number of repair-works.
"I think I can guess," Jaffra said dryly. "Some women just can't seem to wait to remove their clothing." She didn't judge them for being loving, just hasty and careless. Maybe deep down she was a little envious. She spent so much time working, she rarely met single men and when she did, they didn't look at her. Or try did, but then her personality put them off. Better just to be single, to avoid any chance of getting hurt.
"T'is going to be tricky to repair so that nothing remains visible," Endoriel was still inspecting the dress. "People should value their clothes more."
"Especially tailor-made ones." If someone was going to pay extra for a dress, they should treat it with care. Jaffra sighed. "Do we have any more of that fabric? It might be simpler to replace that gore than to repair it."
"I don't know," Endoriel replied and stood up streching her back.
Jaffra blinked at her. "We should look then. It should be difficult to find _that_ shade."
"Yeah," Endoriel was feeling bit lazy today and looked around for apprentice to send to the storage room. But there was none around just now.
"Good. You go and look and I'll start unstitching this." Jaffra didn't want to have to shove the woman if she didn't have to…
"Right," Endoriel took one final look at the dress to memorize the colour and when to rummage the stores. After awhile she returned with two bundles of cloth. "I wasn't sure which one of these is it."
Jaffra held up the piece she'd removed, first against one bolt and then the other. "It doesn't seem to be either of them. It's close, but…" She frowned. "Either of these could have been the dye lot after this one."
"There weren't any other colours that come even close to the original," Endoriel frowned. "Should we just shorten the skirt to knee length? That would mean we have to ask the own's opinion," she pondered.
"Or we could use a different colour." Jaffra frowned. "We should ask her. Whose is it anyway?"
"Can't remember, I'll check the records," she went to the ledger where they kept the records of work orders. "There's two dresses for repairs, turquoise and jade green."
"This is jade green. I finished the turquoise one already," Jaffra gestured to where it lay folded on another table.
"Varija, rider of green Attiath," Endoriel said.
"Ah. I'll send an apprentice to find her." Here's where a flit would come in useful, if Jaffra could ever get one.
"She's probably doing drills right now," Endoriel warned. She had plenty of dragonriding relatives so she had good grasp of their schedules.
"Right. After drills then," Jaffra conceded." As if drills existed as an inconvenience to her alone.
"We can leave it to wait and move on to next one. I have stained sleeve which I though I could cover with bit of embroidered pattern. It's one of those stains that just don't wash off."
"I'd prefer to be creating than repairing," Jaffra remarked. "All right, did you have a pattern in mind?"
"Some abstract twirls or wave pattern. It's male's tunic, so nothing too flowery," she replied. Pulling one the scrap hides, she started to draw different options.
Jaffra nodded. "I'm sure that would work." It wouldn't be cheap either. Maybe it would teach the owner to be more careful next time.
Endoriel got back to work.
