Someone Suitable

Writers: Clancey, Eimi
Date Posted: 1st September 2005

Characters: Daynar, Penryn
Description: Daynar comes to visit, meaning to help Penryn find a 'suitable' Lord Holder, or at least, Lord Regent.
Location: Garnet Valley Hold
Date: month 7, day 9 of Turn 3

Penryn walked out of the kitchens, satisfied that the lunch they had prepared for he and his guest large enough to feed an army. Or a hungry smith. He had never actually met Master Daynar before, and had been surprised to recieve his request for a "quiet lunch to discuss things". Penryn was still getting used to the idea that people were coming to the Hold to talk to _him_. Not many Hallmasters requested audiences with assistant stewards. A drudge peeked her head inside the door, "He's approaching, sir."

"Oh, yes... all right, I'm coming." Penryn straightened his tunic before walking out into the sun light. He walked up to meet the approaching Hallmaster. "Master Daynar, so good of you to come," he said with a respectful bow.

Daynar was so unsettled by recent events that he decided he absolutely must go and see this Penryn, despite his being only an Assistant Steward. There was simply _no one_ else, and the Hallmaster was very concerned for the future of the Hall. One must have the right type of Lord Holder if one is to prosper, after all.

Arriving at the Hold proper, Daynar greeted Penryn, who had quite properly come to meet _him_ instead of having him brought inside to see the suddenly elevated man. "Ahh, good day to you Penryn. I thought I might visit with you, offer you some advice, perhaps help, should you need my assistance?" Seemingly expansive, he obviously wanted to keep on the good side of the man who, currently, was in charge of the Hold. "Thank you, sir. That is very good of you. I'm sure there are many things we have to discuss." Penryn lead the Master back towards the Hold's massive door. "I have had lunch prepared and we can talk privately."

Daynar sniffed appreciatively, definitely a hulking - and hungry -
smith. They had arrived in the private dining area Penryn had had prepared. "How are things coming along in the aftermath of that horrible tragedy?" He asked quietly, as they passed through the door. "Not as well as I would have hoped, sir." Penryn replied as he offered Daynar a seat. "We have yet to catch the culprit."

"That's bad news, Penryn. People who dare to do such a thing must be caught and made an example of, I say." The Hallmaster said in his intense way. "Imagine! Threaten a Lord Holder, and worse, murdering one!" A definite frown at that as he imagined Hallmasters were at risk if a Lord Holder was! "What of the young Heir? Anyone volunteering to be Lord Regent? Or rather, everyone?" "I really cannot say, sir. I am, after all, just the _assistant_
steward who found himself in charge of the Hold by default. So far the Lords have been silent in this regard, at least to me. So far no one has openly challenged little Lord Aslian as heir, and most holder's sons are looking to establish a line of their own, I suspect. But, I'm sure one will stand up soon enough."

Daynar joined the man at the table set up for the pair of them, and then leaned toward his host. "Lord Aslian is the rightful heir, but we must have the _right_ kind of Regent as well, I believe. We have good long-standing traditions here at Garnet Valley, and I'd hate to see a 'new' Bloodline confuse the issues." He said pointedly, then went on.
"Ahh, my good man, you are not at all _just_ the Assistant Steward.
You are currently the _man in charge_ and you should act as such." Penryn nodded. "Rest assured, sir. The Holder's and minor holders know that it is me they have to look to. But the time will come when a descision is made. They must know that when that happens I will fade back into the shadows, as is my duty to the Hold to do."

Daynar considered the man a moment. "Perhaps so, perhaps so. But what if you were chosen Regent, hmm? Who better?" And Daynar could have someone at the Hold he could 'lead' then.. perhaps. "I have no qualification other than I have been an assistant steward, sir. I doubt the council would even look twice at me. The best I can hope for is to be steward in the future." Penryn began pouring wine in the Master Smith's glass. "Don't worry, sir. I'm sure they will find someone suitable for Garnet Valley Hold. Your contracts are still binding and will be honored. They will find a man of Lord Aswic's way of thinking I dare say."

Daynar raised his glass to that comment. "Hear hear. Let's hope so.
Though I think you'd make a fine Steward, Penryn." Make a friend of a man that could be useful, always a good thought, right?

"Thank you sir. I am honored to hear that." Penryn raised his glass to. "To the future of Garnet Valley and the Smith Hall."

The clink of their glasses sealed their agreement and Daynar smiled to himself. Maybe old Aswic dying wouldn't be so bad...after all. "And to the perfect Lord Holder."
