The dining cavern was filling up and Z'ku glanced around, looking for
his wingmates. But instead he spotted a friend and it occurred to him
that he hadn't spoken to the brownrider in a few sevendays. They
should catch up.
"Hi there." Z'ku smiled as he took a seat. "How have you been?"
"Hmm?" Q'arl looked over and blinked. "Sorry, I was miles away. Did
you say something?"
"Just asked how you were doing. What's on your mind?"
"Not much really." Q'arl shrugged. "How's things?"
"Pretty good. Kazom is growing like a weed." He missed having his son
around all the time, but he and Pierka's duties came first. And
sleeping through the night was rather nice, he had to admit.
"Um- oh, the kid?" Q'arl didn't always keep up with things like that.
It was far too domestic for his taste. "Yeah, that's great."
Z'ku sighed. "Such enthusiasm."
Q'arl blinked and then grinned. "Sorry, I guess it's just weird to
think of guys like us as parents. Shouldn't we still be out having fun
and stuff? I know I am."
'I _like_ having a family." As much as Z'ku had tried to fully embrace
Weyr life, he was still a holder at heart in many ways.
"Uh." Open foot, insert foot. "Sure you do. I'm sure I will some day
too. But for now, I just want to enjoy life. Shells, I could be dead
next fall!" Q'arl shrugged.
Z'ku smiled to show he wasn't angry. "That's why spending time with my
family is important. They make me happy."
"Well that's great." Q'arl clapped him on the shoulder. "Life would be
boring if we were all the same, right? So tell me about this woman."
Q'ari really hadn't changed since their weyrling days. "Pierka is
wonderful." A love struck smile brightened Z'ku's face. "She's sweet
and kind. A gentle mother and a strong dragonrider."
"She's cute too," Q'arl added. "You better hope no one tries to steal
her." He winked, but was joking.
"Oh, they can _try_." After what he and Pierka had both been through,
he doubted she would leave him for another man.
Q'arl chuckled. "I'm sure no one would dare." Especially him. It would
be too much work for little return.
"So what about you? Are you enjoying life?" Z'ku picked up a roll and
spread butter on it.
"As often as I can," Q'arl replied. "Which isn't often enough, but
what's a guy to do?" He shrugged.
"Keep trying?" Z'ku teased.
Q'arl laughed. "That's pretty much right. I'll never give up, not
while I'm still able."
The brownrider really was a simple fellow. Z'ku shook his head. "So no
Wingsecond position in your future? That would get in the way of your
fun."
"I think it'll lead to more fun," Q'arl replied. "Girls like men with
rank. Don't they?"
Z'ku laughed. "You are _so_ shallow."
"Life is too short to be deep," Q'arl replied easily. "Waaaay too short."
"While I think it should be as deep and meaningful as possible for the
same reason." Z'ku sipped at his juice. "Every moment is precious." He
was thankful for his time with Pierka and Kazom.
"That it is," Q'arl agreed.
