"Cat! Cat! Hurry, the egg is hatching!" The Hallsecond's voice resounded throughout the kitchens. "Come on! And don't forget the scraps!"
"What? Oh..Oh!" Catriana almost dropped the pitcher she was carrying, somehow managed to pass it to one of the other girls, grabbed the bowl of meat scraps she'd saved from their cooking this afternoon which Daigoro and Cinale had advised her to do. Then she darted out the door with a backwards glance at the Cook. Surely Cinale would understand her haste as she ran after the Hallsecond.
"Now, its just started, so we should have a bit of time," he said breathlessly. The big man had run the whole way down to get her in his excitement. He was rather surprised how winded the exercise had left him. Daigoro came to the decision that he had been spending way too much time behind a desk!
"How long does it take?" She was having a bit of trouble catching her breath as well. She set the bowl of meat down and went to look at the egg in its little pot.
"I think there's no set time, but around ten or fifteen minutes I'd say.
Or maybe that's just what I remember from when Wort was hatched." He opened the door to his office for the girl and quickly ushered her in.
"It was Wort that alerted me to the Hatching," he said, pointing to the bronze perched on the hearth humming softly and watching the egg rock with intense interest.
"Thank you, Wort." Catriana said to the little bronze, then moved to look at the egg as well. "So now we just wait. What's supposed to happen when it Hatches again?" She'd had the lecture at least three times, but she wanted to hear it again, just to make sure!
Daigoro could understand her nervousness. He patiently repeated, "When the Hatchling comes out, start feeding it scraps as soon as possible and keep thinking thoughts of love and happiness. Don't worry about it, when you see the tiny little thing you can't help but feel that way, unless you're some sort of hard-hearted beast. Which I assume you're not," he added with a teasing smile.
"You assume?" She looked at him quizzically. "Surely you know me better than that, Sir!" She grinned, then looked back at the little egg. She was so very excited!
"Watch it now," he said as Wort's humming intensified and the egg began to rock even more violently. His little pet's projected excitement as well as the anticipation of the young girl was contagious as he grinned at the little life struggling to free itself. "Won't be long now. Get ready."
"Alright...." She breathed, once she remembered to breathe. She blindly reached for the bowl of meat and closed her fingers around a slimy handful, all the while thinking loving thoughts at the wildly rocking egg. Cat blinked away tears that suddenly blurred her vision.
Daigoro was confused. "Now why would you be crying, girl? You need to be thinking _happy_ thoughts."
"Oh, but I am! I just...can't help it. They are happy tears..." Catriana insisted. "Sometimes people cry when they're too happy to do anything else!" "Well, don't be so happy that you miss the entire thing," he chuckled.
"Look, a crack has already formed. Wipe your eyes before it hatches or you may end up trying to Impress Wort!"
She laughed, but did as she was told and wiped the tears away with her handkerchief. She kept her eyes on the crack, trying to collect her scattered thoughts and think only of her love and happiness at the little egg and the flit inside. "Well, now, that was a valiant effort," Daigoro smiled as another large crack appeared, but still the little creature inside was struggling to get out. "One more like that should do the trick I should think." "Come on, little one. Come on...almost there! Just a little more..."
Catriana whispered, eyes fixed on the egg, her hand poised to offer the meat to the little thing.
The bronze flits humming intensified, as did the whirling of his eyes as he watched the hatching peek the tip if it's snout through a small hole in the shell. "There we go," Daigoro beamed. "Almost there."
"Oh...look!" Catriana said as the firelizard broke its dark head free. She kept thinking her loving and encouraging thoughts to the little blue as it tumbled out of the shell.
"The meat, hurry," the Hallsecond whispered in her ear.
"Right..." Catriana hastily offered the flit her handful of meat, which it quickly began to devour.
"Hungry little thing," Daigoro chuckled, pulling Wort away from the bowl of scraps as he began to peek in curiously. "Come on you. You'll be fed soon enough. Let the little one eat." Catriana kept feeding the little thing the scraps of meat. "Look at it, Daigoro...so small!"
"Don't worry. He'll grow." The hallsecond scratched at his bronze's eyeridge fondly, remembering when Wort had been a tiny hatchling that fit in his hand.
"What should I name him? Or does he know his name, like they say dragons do?"
"Well, if he knows it, he'll never tell," Daigoro smiled. "You can name him as you like." "Hmm...what about...Brix? He seems sweet enough, don't you little one?" Catriana smiled and stroked the tiny dark blue head.
"Brix," Daigoro smiled. "A suitable name for a Vintner Hall flit." "You think so?" Catriana smiled up at him. "Thank you so much, Sir.
For everything."
"It's my pleasure, Cat. I know you will take good care of each other."
