A Good Idea?

Description: The twins talk about graduating and girls.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 2, day 19 of Turn 8

Z'then was really looking forward to graduating and being done with
weyrlinghood. They'd survived the Blooding, so they were going to
graduate, right? And graduating meant a world of new experiences
opening up.

He hadn't had much of a chance to talk to E'zar over the day and it
felt weird. So he had dropped by his twin's weyr after the day's work
was done.

"So what do you look forward to most about graduating?"

"Freedom from lessons and chores, I guess. I mean, I know we'll have
Wing duties and all that, but it's got to be better than this, right?"
At least, from what E'zar had observed of the adult riders that was
the way it seemed.

"What about you?" E'zar asked his twin as he walked about the weyr,
picking up the scattered clothing of the last female companion he'd
had over, who had left a very lacy bit of under clothing behind.

Z'then tried to focused on his answer. "I'm looking forward to not
having to always account for where we are and free restday travel. I
want to go home. But to see other places, too."

"Yeah, traveling sounds nice." Being able to snatch up a pretty girl
and find a private expanse of beach sounded particularly appealing to
the young brownrider. "What Wing do you think you'll be in?"

"I don't know. I hope not the Weyrleader's - I don't want to be that
high up! And I'm not sure we're ready." Z'then did fine in drills, but
only fine. he wasn't a class standout, he knew that.

E'zar didn't have to look at his brother's face to be picture the look
of worry he knew was there. "What if you talked to D'kere? You could
ask to be considered for one of the lower altitude Wings." He didn't
see any shame in that, everyone had their strengths and weaknesses,
and his twin's weakness was heights.

"That's not a bad idea. It's so embarrassing is all." Z'then scuffed
his foot along the ground.

"Better embarassed than dead." E'zar responded, glancing over at Z'then.

"You're right. It just feels like 'embarrassed' is my state of life
lately. I put my foot in my mouth all the time." The dour mood was
unusual.

E'zar cocked his head to the side, "With who? Girls?"

"I tried asking out Eskalla," he said, referring to one of the
weyrlings in their class. "She just laughed at me."

"Well, she definitely didn't say no because of your looks." E'zar and
Z'then were _identical_ twins, and E'zar never had trouble with the ladies.
"Which means you must have said something silly. So spill. Tell me what you
said to her."

"I said that we should celebrate graduating by going out onto the plateau
and looking at the stars with a bottle of wine." He thought it was
romantic. Apparently she disagreed.

E'zar scrunched his nose up a little. Z'then had always been the romantic
between the two of them. "Eskalla's not the wine and stars type. She'd be
more likely to say yes if you suggested some dancing at a tavern one night."

Z'then thought about it. It didn't seem very...well, nice. It seemed kind
of crass, actually. But Eskalla _was_ high spirited. "I could try that,
unless she laughs at me again."

"Girls like Eskalla want to dance, drink and flirt, Z'then." E'zar advised
as he glanced around his weyr, satisfied that it was tidy enough. "Want to
go grab something to eat in the Dining Cavern?"

"I'm not good at any of those," Z'then muttered. Well, he was good at
dancing. But maybe not the kind of dancing weyrfolk liked. "Maybe I just
like the wrong girls."

Food was a promising notion. "Sure," he said, standing back up.

"Look, what if I talk to Eskalla and that friend of hers, Ashby, and set us
up a double date?" E'zar offered as they walked down the stairs.

Z'then nearly missed a step when he tried to remember Ashby. His first
instinct was to say no - but he hadn't gotten anywhere on his own. And
what if Juvath chased and he still hadn't...hadn't...

"Sure," he blurted out.

E'zar smiled and clapped a hand on his brother's shoulder, "Excellent! I'll
get it all set up. It will be fun, you'll see."

Z'then was a little more doubtful than his twin sounded, but why not give
it a shot. What was the worst that could happen?
