Thayde

Thayde

"Are you sure this is what you want to do, Famell?" Shilara held Ahimell to
her chest as he slumbered in a peace, one leg kicked out from the blanket
that had been swaddled around him.

The corners of Famell's eyes crinkled as he reached out and brushed the
back of his hand across Shilara's cheek. "You deserve the right to work on
your project for Mastery, and the best place to do that is at Jade Harbor.
I will not live apart from my wife and son. You have been patient with me
while I've been away on business and worked insane hours here at the Hall.
Now it is my turn to support you.

"You have worked too hard not to do this." he assured her.

Shilara smiled up at her husband, amazed again at how lucky she was to have
been the one that Famell chose.

"Have you told Thayde yet?"

Famell sighed, "No, it's going to come as a bit of a surprise, I'm afraid,
but it has to be done. I need to explain to him why I am not leaving him in
charge." The Hallmaster stood, but not before pressing a kiss to his wife's
forehead. "Speaking of, I should go, or I will be late."

Leaving Shilara and Ahimell in their quarters, Famell walked down the
hallway to his office and prepared for what would be a hard conversation.
Famell had never considered himself a quitter, and leaving the Dolphin Cove
Hall was one of the hardest decisions he'd ever made, but the time had
come. He was doing what was best for his family, and in the end, his family
was really all that mattered.

"Good morning." Thayde's voice broke him from his reverie as the Hallsecond
knocked on his open door and then walked in to have a seat in his usual
chair.

"Morning." Famell's smile felt tight, forced.

"You wanted to see me?" As Hallmaster and Hallmaster's Seond they met
frequently enough, but this request had felt... different.

"Ah, yes." Famell drummed his fingers on his desk, feeling uncertain of how
to broach the topic of his resignation. "I won't do you the disservice of
small talk right now, I'm just going to get straight to the point. Shilara
is working on her mastery project, that's no secret though is it? She's
been working on it for a while." He rubbed a hand across his forehead as he
realized that he was rambling already. "Uh, anyway, she needs to go to Jade
Harbor to do more research and work, she basically exhausted our resources
here."

Thayde nodded slowly, "So... you two might be gone for a while?"
.
Famell licked his lips, "The truth is, Thayde, we are going to be gone for
more than a while. We're going to be gone permanently, or at least until
Shilara's finished and we don't know how long that could be. I don't want
to string the Dolphin Hall along and keep dumping things onto you when I
know you have your own work to tend to in the infirmary."

Realization of what was really happening seemed to dawn on Thayde's face,
his brown eye widening a bit as he sat up a little straighter in his chair,
"When do you leave?"

"My resignation will be effective in a fortnight. I have spoken with a
dolphineer that I have worked closely with before at Topaz. He will be
arriving within the next sevenday. I will get him settled, introduce you,
and then he will be your acting Hallmaster until a more qualified
individual comes along."

Thayde's jaw tightened, "So you're just going to leave us, and with a
stranger no less?"

Famell had expected that question, "I have to do what is best for Shilara
and Ahimell. I will not live separately from them for the sake of the Hall.
Life is too sort for that. As for the stranger, if I had left you as
Hallmaster Thayde who would have been your second? Who would you have had
to lean on? There is no one else. You need to remain the second so that
you may support the Acting Hallmaster."

It was clear by Thayde's body language and the glow of his eyes that he was
not pleased with Famell's decision, but there was nothing he could do about
it, "Fine."

"I don't want us to part ways angry, Thayde."

Thayde stood, "I have some work to do in the infirmary." The young Master
Dolphineer walked out of the office, his shoulders set in a rigid line.

Famell exhaled deeply, "That went about as well as I expected." Thayde
wasn't even the hardest person to tell, now he had to make the announcement
to the entire Hall, and he doubted it would be any easier.
