Endarin idly rubbed his hand across his stubbled jaw as the ship came in to
dock at the Dolphin Hall. He could see Keva's dorsal fin disappearing into
the deeper waters as she went to greet her new pod. He doubted his
transition would be as easy as hers and for a moment he envied his dolphin
partner.
A familiar face stood on the docks waiting for him, and an uncharacteristic
grin tugged at Endarin's mouth as he tossed his bag, the only item he'd
brought, over his shoulder and strode down the gangplank.
"You've gotten some wrinkles, old man."
"And you've gotten some greys, I see." Famell barked as he gave Endarin a
gruff hug, thumping the other man on the back with his calloused hands.
Endarin slapped the back of his hand against Famell's midsection, "I think
you've gotten a bit soft, too."
Famell looked a little sheepish at that as he took a step back and placed a
hand over his stomach, "Yeah well, you wait and see what all of that desk
work does to you."
"I don't think so, I'm not losing myself for a few hides." Endarin shook
his head, and then squinted up toward the Hall. "Well, show me around then."
"You will like it here, Endy. The water is always great, the Dolphin Cove
Weyrleaders are easy to work with, and the crew here is excellent." Famell
said as he led Endarin off the docks.
"And you are leaving because...?"
Famell cut his eyes sideways at Endarin, "You know why. My wife is working
toward her Master rank and she needs to be at Jade Harbor to do that. If
she goes, I go too."
The other man's thin lips flattened even further into a hard line, "You
should just tell your wife that she is staying at the Hall. Who wears the
pants in your marriage anyway?"
"Oh boy, the ladies here are going to _love_ you." Famell's voice was rich
with sarcasm, but humor still lit his eyes. "The South is a little
different, Endarin, don't forget. Some of your best crafters here are
women, if you want them to work for you then you'll need to treat them like
you would a man."
Endarin grunted, "But they're not men. There is quite a difference."
Famell decided to let it go at that, **He'll just have to learn on his
own.**
"Regardless, Shilara deserves the opportunity to earn Master rank. She's
worked really hard for several Turns toward this and it would be unfair of
me not to give this to her. Besides, the idea of not having
responsibilities, just doing my usual dolphineer duties and taking care of
the baby while Shilara works sounds like a great plan to me."
Endarin shook his head and bit down his reply. It sounded like his friend
didn't know how to control his own woman. She clearly was out of place,
working while her husband played ma to their son.
"What about your Hallsecond? His panties still in a wad because you're
leaving?" Endarin asked as they entered the main hall.
"He's still out of sorts, for sure. Don't hold it against him. Thayde is an
expert in his field of healing, and he'll keep the infirmary in great shape
for you."
"Kinda young for a Hallsecond, ain't he?"
"He was the best man for the job." Famell said simply.
Endarin grunted again. **We'll see.**
"This way." Famell led him down a hallway and at the end he pushed open the
door to reveal the Hallmaster's quarters, now empty of Famell's things that
had been packed up and placed in Shilara's rooms until they left.
"Nice." Endarin tossed his bag on the bed and looked around at his new
home.
"There are some perks to being Hallmaster." Famell turned back toward the
door. "Come on, I'll take you out to the infirmary, you can meet Thayde."

The structure that held the infirmary was impressive, Endarin would admit,
and he was intrigued by the holding cells of water that had been built that
housed the injured dolphins. A man in his early thirties sat behind a desk,
this man, he presumed, was his Hallsecond.
"Thayde, do you have a minute? I wanted to introduce you to Endarin, he'll
be taking over after I am gone. Endarin, this is Thayde."
Thayde's dark brown eyes were not welcoming as he stood and extended his
hand to Endarin, "Nice to meet you." The words rang hollow.
"Likewise." Endarin replied back, his voice firm, his cobalt eyes hard.
"Once I've shown Endarin around and introduced him to everyone I'll set up
a meeting and we'll get everything hashed out for my departure." Famell
told Thayde, who merely nodded, tight-lipped.
"Fine." He went back to his chair. "If there's nothing else I'm prepping
some work for the apprentices."
Famell exchanged glances with Endarin, "Sure." Leading the way out, Famell
was not surprised when Endarin spoke up.
"What's his problem, anyway?"
"He's mad that I'm leaving so suddenly, I dunno. Maybe he's in the same
camp as you and thinks I shouldn't leave my position for Shilara." Famell
raised his shoulders. He didn't know what to think about Thayde's new
attitude. They had never had cross words before.
"Looks like you're leaving me with some hard feelings to deal with."
Endarin accused as they walked back toward the Hall.
Famell clapped his hand on Endarin's shoulder, "Good thing you're up for
the job then."
