C'rin

Ciara had always sung to her babies. Little nonsense songs that had no meaning other than to connect with them. This one was an ancient song she'd been taught when she was small. She rocked Keseran and sang softly.

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray.
You'll never know dear, how much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away."

The soft voice of his mother carried through the weyr, causing Carin to pause momentarily outside of the entrance between weyrcouch and weyr. It wasn't often that Carin visited his mother, at least, not since she'd taken up living with the Weyrleader. It was too awkward being around K'sedel when everyone in the entire Weyr knew how desperate R'yin was to have Ciara back. The song she sung was one that he'd heard all throughout his childhood and it brought back happier memories.

"Mom?"

"Carin?" A broad smiled lit up her face though her voice was still soft. "Hello sunshine."

"Mother." Carin smiled as he came over and pressed a kiss to her temple where she sat. "Hello, baby brother." He said, looking down at Keseran.

She closed her eyes at the kiss and smiled back down at the baby. "He looks so much like you did at this age," she said. "Even down to the little curl at the back of his neck." She reached up to caress Carin's head. Both of them practically bald with a little peach fuzz and that
one curl.

Because of the curliness of his hair, Carin tended to keep his cut fairly close to the scalp, but even then once his hair started to grow out the first thing that developed was the curl. "I'm glad you are both okay." He'd been concerned when he'd first found out that his
mother was pregnant, she wasn't exactly the age to be bearing children.

"Thank you," she smiled. "But I think I'm done. I'm going for the strong tea from now on. K'sedel is just too prolific." She patted the seat next to her. "Would you like to hold him?"

Carin wrinkled his nose, "Too much info, Mom." He really didn't want to hear about anything that related the Weyrleader to his mother sexually. When the invitation came to hold his new sibling, Carin dutifully took the seat beside of his mother and extended his arms.

Ciara just grinned and put her newborn into his big brother's arms. She knew how touchy he was regarding K'sedel but he was a fact of her life and Carin would just have to find a way to be alright with it. "There you go," she said.

Taking his baby brother in his arms, Carin had to admit that it was hard not to like the little warm bundle in his arms, even if he was half-K'sedel.

"It seems like it wasn't long that Radela was this small."

"It seems like it wasn't long ago that _you_ were this small," she said with a soft smile for her eldest child. "I wasn't very much older than you are now."

"That's a little frightening." Carin chuckled, trying to imagine himself as a father. He of course knew that it was a possibility, especially if he Impressed.

"It happens," she said. "And I did desperately want you."

"Even though you knew I would be half Dad?" He asked.

"Hey," she reached out to caress his face again. "We were in love then sweetheart. You were created by that love." She couldn't say the same for later in her life but then... it was true.

Carin smiled. He liked thinking that at one point in time there had not been so much strife between his parents. Of course, he didn't blame much of that on his mother, it was his father who couldn't let Ciara go and just move on with his life.

"Alright, I'd better give you this guy back. I've got chores today." He said, carefully handing Keseran back.

She took the sleeping baby from his brother and grinned. "I'm glad you came by. I love you."

"I love you too, Mom." Carin stood up, kissed his mother on the cheek, and then headed out of the weyr. Being around his mom gave him that ache in the middle of the chest that was hard to explain. It made him miss being able to spend time with her the way he had when he was a
kid.
