Description: Irabel reports in to the new Acting Hallmaster
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 3, day 9 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: Famell
Endarin frowned as he looked down at the schedule on his desk and realized
that his next appointment was with one of the female dolphineers. The notes
Famell had left behind explained that she had been on a trip, one involving
cartography. **Ugh, cartography. Arguably one of the most boring parts of
being a dolphineer.** He thought to himself as he placed the clipboard back
down on his desk.
"Gonna need some klah before this one." he muttered as he turned and
grabbed the pitcher from the warmer in his office.
He didn't have long, for the rap at the door followed just after filling
his mug. When she was given leave, Irabel opened the door and stepped
inside, several pieces of parchment clutched in her arms. She peered
inside, then stepped through. "Sir." She greeted him with a nod, then
crossed over to stop before his desk. "I have my report, sir."
Endarin turned and reclaimed his seat, motioning at Irabel to have a seat
with his free hand. "Yes, Famell left a few scribbled lines about your
trip. Why don't you give me a rundown on what you did with your time away
from the Hall?"
Succinct, to the point. Irabel would take the same route and sat down in
the indicated chair. "Several Islands were discovered North East, ones
that hadn't previously been indicated on maps. Since it's not an area
frequented by seacrafters, that's not surprising. A turn or so ago,
however, some ships got pulled there when wind died and currents carried
them far off course. Initial reports indicated they could hold possible
potential for resources, so the Dolphin Hall decided to take a look I took
a team out there and we spent the last couple of months mapping the area,
noting currents, and taking a brief survey of immediately visible
resources."
When she had finished verbally informing him, Irabel loosened the hold upon
the parchment papers and held them out for the acting Hallmaster to take.
"You'll find detailed maps and reports, sir."
Endarin took the maps from Irabel and placed them down on his desk. Gazing
over the Dolphin Hall territory he was vaguely impressed by the detail of
what he was seeing. "How long have you been with the Hall, Journeywoman?"
Irabel knew the man hadn't been there long, but there were already whispers
about how harsh he could be. With his question, she wondered if he found
some fault in what she had done. "I apprenticed in the North and came down
with my mother when I was fourteen turns. That was twenty one years ago."
And she had never thought to go back North, so much had she come to love
where she resided.
The woman's experience explained to Endarin why the work she had given him
was satisfactory. It wasn't what he had expected, but then Famell had told
him that it wouldn't be exactly as he had envisioned it-- female crafters.
Still, as Endarin looked back up at Irabel he couldn't help but wonder why
a woman, and one who was attractive, would want to do this when she could
be married and providing her husband with children. **But then, your own
wife wasn't very good at that, was she?**
"Your reports look satisfactory." He told Irabel as he placed them to the
side to thoroughly catalogue later.
"Thank you sir." Satisfactory. Irabel had hoped for more than that, and
if Famell had been there, she probably would have been given a better
indication of how well she had done. Still, with what little she'd heard,
'satisfactory' was probably about as good as she was going to get. "Do you
have any initial questions for me sir?"
"Yes, I do as a matter of fact. What are your future plans here at the
Hall? Are you looking to master some day, are you content with your work
as a journeywoman, or will you be moving on some day?" Endarin tilted his
head, his eyes narrowed as he observed her, waiting for her response.
Her future plans. They had always been the same and Irabel had yet to sway
from them. "I hope to Master some day and have no intention of moving on."
She admitted. "This is my home, my life. I don't see myself anywhere
else." Although that could certainly change, that was where Irabel was at
the moment.
Endarin figured that was the case considering Irabel was well beyond the
normal age for marrying. "What are some things you would like to see
changed around the Dolphin Hall?"
He was asking her? For a moment, Isabel hesitated. While she had loved
Famell as a friend, she also knew that in the last turn or so, he'd lost
his focus. It wasn't that she wanted to deny him a family, but it seemed
as if he had sometimes neglected the Hall. There hadn't been a good
balance between family and Craft. "I'd like to see a Hallmaster who is
more involved and...I'd like to see more exploration." There was another
pause before she added, "I'd like to see more cooperation between the
Seacraft and the Dolphin craft."
"I've been through everything that Famell left and there is very little to
suggest that he was even in contact with the Seacraft Hall. You're right
that we need to do a better job utilizing them. The dolphineers and
seacrafters should work together seamlessly." Endarin made it a note to
contact the Hallmaster there to see if a meeting could be arranged. "As for
a Hallmaster who is more involved, you have that now. I plan on introducing
some new projects to the Hall soon, hopefully that will get everyone on
track."
"New projects?" That piqued Irabel's interest. What sort? Long term
ones? As far as she knew, Endarin was only acting Hallmaster, but it
seemed he had more in mind. Was he taking on the position permanently?"
"Yes, just some things I am considering." Endarin had no intention of
sharing it with a journeywoman before he had talked to the Hall's master
crafters. He lifted his cup of klah and took a generous sip.
"Thank you for your time, Journeywoman."
There was the dismissal. While Famell hadn't been as involved as she
thought he should have, he was at least a bit warmer toward his fellow
dolphineers. Irabel didn't try to argue, though, simply inclined her head
respectfully. "Yes sir." Then she turned and hurried out the room.
