Running a Simulation?

Writers: Avery, Heather
Date Posted: 5th December 2015

Characters: Endarin, Talern
Description: Endarin talks to Master Talern.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 3, day 13 of Turn 8

The last sevenday had been very interesting, with Famell's decision to
depart and the arrival of the new Hallmaster. Talern had decided to
reserve his opinion on everything until he'd met the new man and
learned what his direction for the Hall was going to be like. As was
usual, rumors were beginning to fly around the Hall, everything more
outlandish than the last. He couldn't help listening to some of the
rumors, even if he was trying to keep an open mind; they were too
omnipresent to be avoidable.

The acting Hallmaster was meeting with all of the masters
individually. When it was his turn, Talern knocked on the Hallmaster's
door.

"Come in." Endarin called, squeezing the bridge of his nose between
his forefinger and thumb. He hoped this meeting went better than the
last. The woman had been a blathering idiot, how in the name of
Faranth had she ascended to the rank of Master? **That just goes to
show how lenient Famell has let the Mastery process down here
become.** He thought sourly.

Talern entered and inclined his head deeply to the new acting
Hallmaster before taking a seat. "My name is Talern, my rank Master, I
don't have a long-term partner in the pod," he said as introduction.

"No partner? Did something happen to yours?" Endarin asked, liking
immediately that the other man got directly to the point.

"Age took my last one a few turns ago, and I've been working with the
unpartnered ones on rotation since then," he answered.

Endarin tried not to think about it too much, but he dreaded the day
that Keva was gone. She'd been with him through a lot of ups and downs
in his life, and she was far more faithful than his wife had ever
been.

"Excellent, they need the attention. What daily duties do you see to?" he
asked.

"I work with the search/rescue team for big emergencies. I also train
apprentices on search and rescue basics."

Endarin jotted these things down on the ledge he had started on all of
the crafters at the Hall. "How is it going with the current group of
apprentices?"

"Not bad. A few decide it's not for them. With the Weyr nearby, they
seem easily distracted. There's a few very promising ones, though."

"How many do we usually lose to the Weyr as Candidates?" Endarin
asked, curious about the effect the Weyr had on the Hall.

"We lost 3 to Search last Turn. I think it's because our craft draws
people who loves travel and adventure, and the Weyr can also give that
to them," Talern said, though he wasn't an expert.

What wasn't enticing about the prospect of having your own dragon?
Endarin thought.

"Do we ever get any of those back if they don't Impress?" He hadn't
been up to visit the Weyr yet, so he wasn't sure how enticing of a
place it could be, but he was sure to youngsters it was bound to turn
their heads.

"We got a young man back after the last Hatching. But some stay. It
depends on what they love more, the sea or the sky." He knew how
powerful the sky was, he had enough riders in his family.

Endarin thought that was a poetic way of putting it. "Do you have any
family at the Weyr? I've noticed quite a few of the crafters here do."

"Two children live at Dolphin Cove, another two at Dragonsfall. I'm
used to the Weyr ways."

"Last question, what do you want to see change around the Dolphin Hall? A
new leader is the best opportunity to get some things fixed, and being a
man of your experience I am sure you must have some good ideas of what is
needed around here." Endarin asked.

There were a couple things Talern thought needed to be fixed.
Unfortunately, one of them wasn't anything a Hallmaster could work on,
unless everyone in the South woke up and realized how bad keeping down
half their people was.

"Obviously I'm biased because of my specialty. But I'd like to see us do
some more salvage and recovery operations farther away from the Hall.
There are some potential shipwrecks we have marked but haven't been
cleaned up that would be good for the most senior apprentices or young
journeyman refreshers, but they'd require a team being away for a few
sevendays."

He paused before continuing. "I realize this impacts the Hall's
performance. On the other hand, we're going into storm season soon enough,
and in case there's a wreck, a simulation drill might have them sharp
enough to save extra lives."

"I like the idea of a simulation, we need everyone prepared. I've seen from
Famell's notes that hurricanes aren't unusual to this area. Why don't you
go ahead and put together a team." Endarin suggested, thinking that they
should get this moving soon.

"I'd be happy to put together a team and a suggested drill for your
review," the other master said.

Endarin nodded and stuck out his hand to Talern, "Excellent. It was a
pleasure meeting you Master Talern, I'll be waiting on that report."
