Pierka

Z'ku had fretted over things and finally decided on a private dinner.
They had those once in a while so it wouldn't be too unusual. The
small dining table in his weyr was comfortable enough for the two of
them, although Z'ku himself was anything but comfortable. He took
another sip of wine, trying to calm his nerves.

"Oh this looks nice," Pierka said as she came in the door. She'd gone
to the baths after drills and her hair was still damp. She layed her
bundle on a chair and crossed to give Z'ku a kiss. "How was your day?"
It was a question she always asked. Sharing her time with the
bronzerider was one of the highlights of her day.

"Good." He searched for something to add. "One of the new riders is
having some trouble adjusting, but I think things will work out." Most
newly graduated weyrlings struggled a bit at first but the Wing knew
how to compensate.

"Good," she echoed with a smile and slid into the chair next to him.
She held up her empty glass, "Got some for me?"

Z'ku barely manged to keep from banging his knees as he got up and
carried the wine to her. His hands shook just a bit as he poured her a
glass. Should he ask now, or wait until they were done eating?

She took the glass from him and the her eyes grew a little puzzled.
"Are you alright," she half smiled.

"I'm fine."

}:You are nervous. It is silly. You should ask her. She will not
refuse you,:{ Xemroth said.

With the way his stomach was jittering, Z'ku wasn't going to be able
to eat much anyway, so it would be best to get this over with.
"There's... something I want to ask you."

She didn't ever remember seeing Z'ku this way, so she was puzzled by
what appeared to be nerves. "Alright," she said with a reassuring
smile.

He took a deep breath, heart racing. "Pierka, would you be my weyrmate?"

She was stunned... but her eyes widened and her lips curved. They'd
been practically living together since before Kazom was born. So they
were practically defacto Weyrmates but this was a formal request. Her
hand rose to her lips and her eyes shimmered suspiciously like
impending tears. "Yes," she choked out and nodded frantically at the
same time. "Yes, Z'ku. I would love to be your weyrmate!" She flung
herself into his arms and coincidentally his lap.

He squeezed her tight for a moment before seizing her lips. "Oh
Pierka," he said between kisses. "I'm so happy. _You_ make me so
happy!" Out on the ledge Xemroth bugled in shared joy.

Her hands went to his face and she looked deeply into his eyes. "You
make me so happy I can't tell you," she said softly and then kissed
him again before hugging him as hard as she could.

"I love you," he murmured between kisses. "I love you and Kazom and
I'm so glad we get to be a family."

"Me," she kissed him again. "Too," and this time she was all soft and
pliable in his arms. "Show me how much," she whispered.

"Pierka," he groaned, kisses becoming heated. How could she be so
wonderful? Z'ku got up, lifting her easily. "Dinner can wait."

~~Fade to black~~

She rolled over on the bed and stroked Z'ku's chest with the tips of
her fingers. "Dinner's cold."

"But it was worth it." He caught her hand and brought it up to kiss
her palm. "Weyrmate."

"Weyrmate," she smiled in return. "You're worth it." It was really and
profoundly true for her. While T'nom had been flashy and intense, Z'ku
was strong and steady and gave her the one thing she'd wanted more
than anything in her life... a family. Now they not only had that
family and that security she'd always craved. They had trust and love. Who
on the face of Pern could ever want more than that.

"So are you." He kissed her. "I wouldn't want it any other way." The
circumstance that brought them together had been painful at the time
but Z'ku couldn't imagine a better life. Sure, there were compromises
due to being a dragonrider, but this was as close to perfect as a life
could get during a Pass. He wouldn't want to give up either Xemroth or
his family for anything.

Her eyes twinkled. "We'll have to tell my sister," she loved saying
that word 'sister.' She couldn't have imagined the way it would taste
just a few months ago. Neither could she imagine this kind of
happiness. "And we'll have to tell our son."

"I don't think he's going to understand for a while yet." Z'ku
chuckled. "But I do like the idea. Your sister will be happy. And your
grandparents." He shifted a little. "I should tell my family, too. You
should meet them." He'd mentioned Pierka to them but didn't quite know
how much he should explain about their relationship. They were quite
hidebound.

"You want me to meet them?" Her eyes grew round and she smiled
happily. "I'd love to."

"They can be a bit... stuffy, but I'm sure you'll charm them." He'd be
sure to write ahead and explain everything so they wouldn't be
shocked.

She smiled and hugged him again. How very much her life had changed in
the last Turn. "Now I'm hungry," she said and jumped off the bed.
