The sun glinted off the waves as the ship slowly slid into the dock. The sense of anticipation at arrival lifted the moment the clunk of the hull sounded across the air. The ship immediately became a hub of activity, seacrafters hurrying to secure the lines and lower the plank to let passengers disembark.

Sharev glanced off the back of the ship, knowing Ajan and the rest of the pod were lurking around somewhere just out of view. The large dolphin never ventured too far away for long. He swung his bag onto his shoulder and stepped down onto dry land.

Far away from the boat, a small body was playing on the land. She was older now, which meant she could play more by herself. Veerona didn't disappear for long periods of time and an adult usually knew where she was but she had tired of being underfoot all the time and had taken to exploring her surroundings more. Turning, she saw the man approaching and didn't recognize him at first.

Sharev nodded to her as he approached. "Hey kiddo." He wasn't the most fatherly of men, but once they got old enough to chat and do chores, he could hold a conversation with a child.

"Oh hi." Since Naton was in Search and Rescue she tended to see most of the men who worked in that specialty. Sharev was one of those so Veerona was familiar. "Where ya been? Where ya goin? Bring anything good?" She was hoping for something like saltwater candy. Sometimes when they went to the seaholds they brought it back.

"Sorry, nothing this time. Unless you're into driftwood. I found a few interesting bits." He liked to gather bits and pieces and bring them back. Someone could always use them.

"No I just like shells. I can make bracelets and necklaces with them." She frowned and realized he still hadn't answered her other questions. "Where d'ya go Sharev?"

"East." He nodded back in that direction. "A ship got into trouble in a storm and ran aground on a small island. They'd been there for several days, but they're safe now."

"Oh that's good. Did they starve?" Ever since she had been caught in that hurricane, Veerona automatically thought about being scared and hungry. That was the part that scared her the most.

"No, they had fish. Lots of fish." They wouldn't have gone hungry for a while, but they'd have been very tired of eating fish.

"Oh well that's good." She grew quiet then, walking beside him and wondering about things. "Next time, if you go somewhere fun, can you get something pretty for me?" Sometimes he did, but it wasn't always. She liked pretty things.

"I'll do my best kiddo," he replied. "If you want, we could go for a walk on rest day and find some shells?"

"Yeah okay. Milga takes me sometimes and so does Bel. But sometimes they're busy. Milga's getting older and she's trying to be a good apprentice. I can read really good now too. Did you know that?" Her eyes got a little wider as she made that announcement. She was quite proud of herself really. Of course she was always learning new words.

"I didn't know," he replied. "Maybe you could read for me some time?" Having no kids of his own, it was nice to spend time with the hall's youngsters.

"Oh sure. Anytime," she agreed readily as if she was doing him a favor. "Glad you had a good trip I guess and that everyone got saved. Did they thank you?" Veerona didn't really conceptualize just how grave that situation might have been. She hadn't been that close to death yet even though her mother had died when she was younger.

"I'm sure they did," he replied. "They were happy to be saved anyway. I'm sure they didn't want to be stuck eating fish for days."

"Surely not. Fish starts to stink after a little bit. Could you imagine?" She held her nose in disgust. Making an unladylike noise, she saw they'd come to the edge of the hall. "Well, I'd better head up. Think it's time to wash up. Maybe I'll see you at mealtime?" She was hopeful. He told good stories, after all.

"Maybe kiddo." He'd have a pile of paperwork to get done. "If they're serving some red meat tonight." It had been days since he'd had any and he was all but craving it.

"Kay then. Bye!" She waved before disappearing. Veerona was hoping for a nice bubbly pie for dessert herself.
