"This is Maylee. She's really nice. D'ya wanna play with her,
Sophine?" Syren offered the small girl a doll that had a mop of blonde
hair. The young hold resident didn't mind playing with the younger
girl. Her own younger sister was having a visit to the healers for a
cough of some kind.
Venrys was watching the two of them in the floor from her chair perch.
She had a book open but was only half reading it. She took babysitting
very seriously. Even if there was an adult not too far from the room.
"Yup," Sophine popped up and then began jumping up and down around the
room. "I have a doll," she said and got it from the other side of the
room to show Maylee. "Would you like to play with her?"
"Sure! What's her name?" Syren was confident around younger children.
It was older children that made her nervous-like when Venrys was bossing
her. Playing with Sophine was easy.
"Her is Beeba," Sophine said and stopped jumping to run into her room
and grab the doll off her bed. A moment later she was back in the room
with the obviously rather expensive doll and handing it to Syren. "She is
my bestest friend," she added with a smile.
Syren looked the doll over and her eyes opened just a bit. She was a bit
surprised to see that Sophine had such a toy. After all, her mother wasn't
even married and she was a seamstress. "She's very nice. Does she drink
klah?"
Syren wasn't the only one that was surprised. Venrys noticed the trimmings
on the doll as well and wondered how Sophine had gotten such a gift. Maybe
someone had given it to her mother in exchange for services. Parale had never
gotten anything so fine for her dyework though.
"She only likes tea," Sophine stopped jumping and sat cross legged on
the floor with their tiny little cups and saucers. "With two
sweeteners." Her little mind had plucked her mother's preferences from
somewhere in the back of her mind.
"Oh well you should give her some then. She's probably thirsty." Syren made
like she was fixing a cup for herself, her gestures elaborate though imaginary.
Sophine smiled and tilted her head as she mimicked Syren's motions
with her own and set it in front of her doll. She held up an empty
plate "Like a sweet," she asked.
"Oh yes thank you," came the automatic answer and Syren mimed picking up a
sweet and taking a bite. "Oh very good. You have to tell me the name
of your cook, Lady Sophine."
Sophine didn't know it but she laughed like her mother. It was a
musical and beautiful sound and one that could gain her much in the
turns to come. "Her name is Petrine," she responded. "And she can make
pancakes!"
"I love pancakes!" Syren moved slowly and smiled. "With syrup and butter
and everything!" She made a face of rapture as she thought about breakfast
on her birthingday when she could have anything she wanted.
"Or with blueberries," Sophine gushed after Syren. "They're so yummy!"
Realizing she was now hungry, Syren looked over at Venrys. "Venrys, is it
time for snack yet?" That was her best little sister voice.
Venrys glanced down at her and realized she was going to have to get it sooner
or later anyway. So the ten turn old pushed herself up and nodded, brushing off her skirt and setting her book aside. "Yeah okay. Give me just a bit."
Syren turned back to Sophine, triumphant. "Maybe she'll give us some cookies if
we're good."
Sophine really liked cookies so she immediately picked up the doll
Syren had handed her and began brushing her hair. "Maylee has pretty
hair," she smiled hoping she was being good enough for cookies.
It wasn't much longer and Venrys returned, setting a tray of snacks in the
middle of the small girls. She grabbed a small sandwich for herself and sat down
on the floor with them. "Juice for you both and sandwiches. There are some crackers too."
Sophine looked at her plate and picked up the sandwich but her young
mind was still stuck on what Syren had said. "No cookies?"
Venrys gave Syren a small look, then turned to placate Sophine. "If you eat up a sandwich, you can have a cookie for dessert. Only good girls get cookies."
Sophine's eyes widened and she nodded. "I'll be very good, and so will
Beeba." Sophine took a small piece of her sandwich and placed on a
play plate in front of her doll. Then she began to devour the rest of it.
