The Dolphin Hall was only a pleasant stroll away so N'vanik walked
down the beach. He'd sent a note ahead to the new Hallmaster letting
him know he was on the way. A rather pleased looking drudge led him to
Endarin's office.
"Welcome to Dolphin Cove, Master Endarin."
Endarin had the door open and waiting, he'd been pleased to receive
the note that the Weyrleader was coming by. As the new Hallmaster,
Endarin wanted to ensure a prosperous and meaningful relationship with
the Weyr.
"Thank you Weyrleader, please have a seat." He gestured.
"Thanks. Must be strange to you to have the Hall under a Weyr instead
of a Hold." It felt normal to N'vanik by now and he still missed the
Harpers.
"It is different," Endarin agreed as he reclaimed his seat. A drudge
appeared in short order carrying a tray of refreshments for the two
men. "Being at Topaz my entire life being so close to the Weyr is
something of a... curiosity. Your goldrider, Meledei, has been most
helpful and informative though."
"Ah." N'vanik smiled at that. "We're very lucky to have her."
Endarin agreed with a nod of his head. "So what sort of working
relationship did Famell have with the Weyr? I've been looking through
records and things trying to get a grasp of how the Dolphin Hall and
Weyr work together, since it is very different than a Hold."
"We work pretty well. I'd say the big thing is we know we can lean on
each other, especially in a crisis. The dolphineers warn us about bad
storms, we can fly in for a rescue." N'vanik tilted his head. "We're
like... good neighbors."
"Good neighbors that tell women if they're pregnant or not?" Endarin
arched an eyebrow. It was no secret how many women came down to the
dolphineers expecting to be seen and diagnosed.
"Is that a problem?" N'vanik knew it happened, but it wasn't an
agreement between the Weyr and the Hall. If women wanted to check with
the dolphins, that was personal.
"Not a problem necessarily, just something I have been curious about
since I can't seem to find any record on how these dolphineers are
compensated for their time when they do such a thing." Endarin said.
"Fair enough. If they're getting services, people should be paying
somehow." If weyrfolk thought they could get it for free, that was a
problem.
Endarin nodded, glad that the Weyrleader was reasonable. "I'll see if
we can come up with a suitable form of payment then."
"There's being friendly neighbors and there's taking advantage. I
don't want us crossing that line." Maybe it was just a
misunderstanding, or maybe there were a few offenders. "Let me know if
anyone gives your people trouble."
"Thank you, Weyrleader," Endarin said, genuinely pleased. "Already you
are much easier to do business with than a Lord Holder." he said.
N'vanik laughed. "So I'm not the tyrant some people paint me as?"
"Not from where I'm standing, but I'm not the most lenient sort
either." Endarin grinned a little.
"Ah. I try to be as laid back as I can." N'vanik shifted in the chair.
"Funnily enough, becoming Weyrleader mellowed me out." After his
initial panic about being unfit, he'd found he truly enjoyed the job.
"Right now I'm just trying to focus on getting the Hall back into a
proactive state. I'm not much for idleness." In Endarin's opinion
there was always something they could be doing for the betterment of
the crafthall.
"Let us know if you need help with anything." The Weyrleader was glad
to be in a position to offer help. His first few Turns he'd been
asking for help from the other Weyrs, struggling with a shortage of
riders.
"I certainly will, Weyrleader, thank you."
