Endarin really did not enjoy firelizards, especially the way they just
"popped" in whenever they wanted, startling a person to within an inch
of their life. He especially did not like firelizards when they
delivered bad news. His cobalt eyes scanned the letter once more,
making sure that they weren't playing tricks on him.

"Oberan," he called for the apprentice that worked as an assistant.

"Yes, sir?"

"I need Master Naton, Master Talern and Journeywoman Irabel." He
looked up from the letter. "Now."

Hearing the urgency in the Hallmaster's voice, Oberan scuttled from
the room to find the dolphineers.

Oberan spotted Talern in the dining hall. "Hallmaster Endarin says you
need to come to his office, right now."

Talern pushed back, leaving his plate where it was but grabbing his
klah. "On my way."

When the summons reached Naton he was taking his meal with his wife.
But he put down his fork and rose to kiss Jylanya before following
Oberan out of their quarters toward the Hallmaster's office.

Irabel had also take her food in her own quarters, not wishing to deal
with the company of other people. When she received the summons, the
tension in the voice indicate that something wasn't right. Without
finishing her half eaten meal, Irabel immediately locked and closed
her door, then hurried through the halls and to the Hallmaster's
office. She arrived just as two other dolphineers did. With a
startled nod, she greeted them silently, then slipped in behind the
others.

"I'm sorry for the short notice," Endarin told the three dolphineers
as they gathered in his office. "I summoned you three because you are
my senior rescue and salvage specialists." He turned back to his desk
and picked up the letter.

"I've gotten word from Topaz Seahold that a ship has disappeared in a
storm. Thayde and Lord Zathris of Amber Hills were both on that ship."

Talern drew in a surprised breath. To have a ship disappear was bad
enough. To have one of their own and an important personage be part of
the loss...

"They were heading to Topaz, or from Topaz?" he asked. Knowing their
departure and destination ports could be useful information for
predicting.

"It was a fishing trip. They departed from Topaz en route to
Windswept. They're a sevenday late in reporting. Topaz says they have
sent out some of their flits to just check and see if the storm slowed
down the ship, but they've not returned with any news." Endarin knew
the Topaz area well since he had lived there and grown up with the
dolphineers.

The news came as a shock. If there hadn't been a chair right behind
you, Irabel might have sat down right upon the floor. After a moment,
she managed to push herself back to her feet. "Have any other ships
traversed the same path?"

"The letter doesn't say, hopefully we can find out more when we get to
Topaz. Since I know the area and the dolphineers there I'll go that
far with you and coordinate from there. Talern, Naton, I will leave it
up to you two to pick the rest of the team while I get in touch with
the Weyr for transportation to Topaz." Endarin figured he knew a
goldrider who could help procure them some rides.

Talern nodded, his mind racing as he considered who he'd pick. For
something like this, he'd prefer people who had experience in search
already. Though maybe Naton would have an idea he hadn't thought of.
He also wondered if they'd be able to take any of their own equipment.

"I assume Topaz has on-hand equipment for us to borrow, if we can't
transport all we'll need?"

Naton was a shocked as everyone else but his mind started whirling.
"Have they found an wreckage or flotsam? Have their pods discovered
anything to place that ship?"

"Nothing has been recovered yet. The dolphineers at Topaz have very
limited equipment and resources since the best of what they had was
sent here when the Hall relocated." Endarin looked at Talern, "We'll
need to transport what we can ourselves."

"Understood. Once the team's selected, we'll take from our caches."
Fortunately, Talern had been having some of the journeymen who wanted
to specialize in the subfield help him sort the response room's
equipment. After all, time was critical.

"I did already ship some of the search lights to them last Turn,"
Naton volunteered. "So," he looked around the table. "Will there be
any assistance from the Weyr?"

Endarin answered, "I'm contacting them next, I wanted you three to be the
first to know. I expect they will help, after all of the pregnancies we
have diagnosed the least they can do is ferry us to Topaz. I imagine
Dragonsfall will send riders looking for that Lord Holder since he's from
their territory."

This was something Talern could help with. Of course actual Weyr support
would be best, but there was something that could happen if they said no.

"If the Weyr doesn't agree to officially help, for some reason, I have an
idea. T'rin of brown Blarieth is my son, and he could provide unofficial
transport."

"We also have some former dolphineer riders at Dolphin Cove. I'm sure
they'd be willing to help as well should we call on them." Naton tried
to remember the young woman... "Oh yes Pierka and a few others."

Irabel would have been surprised if the Weyr refused to assist in the
search. If Lord Zathris was one of them, then surely not only that
Dolphin Cove, but Dragonsfall, as Endarin had mentioned. "I'll start
making a list of supplies needed." The sooner they left to begin the
sweeps, the better.

Naton spoke up one last time. "I'll ask Jylanya for a list of
dolphineers who became riders just in case we need to ask for help
from them."
