"Good morning, Weyrleaders," G'nir greeted when he entered the meeting
room. He was carrying an armful of hides. Placing them on the table,
he pulled himself a seat. "It's a time to graduate our senior
weyrlings."
"It is indeed," K'reyel said glancing at the dates on the hide at the
top of the pile. "How many of this class are old enough for the
wings?"
"Twenty nine, we have two riders who are under fifteen," G'nir replied.
"And they are?" asked K'reyel, not being familiar with the whole Weyr yet.
"R'gelen, rider of bronze Iroth and W'len, rider of green Alissath. I
prefer to keep them both in Cerulean Wing, R'gelen has several Turns
before he reaches the age, but for W'len, it's just six months," G'nir
replied. He had to consult his notes, since he didn't remember all the
weyrlings yet. R'gelen he did remember.
"Do you have a good sense of W'len's capabilities yet? It might be
good to decide in advance where he'll go once he comes of age, if he's
that close." Genna said when she found an opening in the conversation.
She was flattered to have been asked to attend and was intent on
making a valuable contribution.
"E'naer?" G'nir turned to his Wingthird, who knew the class much
better than he did.
"He's bit immature for his age, prone for recklessness," E'naer told
them. "His green has shown Search abilities. W'len is a weyrbrat, has
training in tannercraft."
Genna just nodded and looked around at the Wing- and Weyrleaders. They
would know where those qualities would fit in best.
Saibra's lips quirked into a smile at the description of the green
Weyrling, "I think he sounds like Sienna Wing material then. It's a
safer place for him to learn the ropes and mature without endangering
other riders in Fall."
Genna smiled to herself vaguely, realizing that would mean he'd be
partly her responsibility as well. Perhaps she should try to meet up
with him before he turned of age, might serve them both.
That settled, G'nir moved to other weyrlings. He was progressing in
alphabetic order, so Alekra was first on his list. "Alekra, rider of
green Carobith. Has she caught anyone's eye?" he asked, looking around
the wingleaders. Most wingleaders kept an eye on weyrlings, reserving
some of them to their wings, if they found one they thought a good
match.
"I've seen her and liked what I've seen," D'ale put in. As an Acting
Wingleader again he had been taking charge in Cyan and making
decisions until a new Weyrleader was in place for him to hand the job
back to. "Cyan can use her."
"Then she'll be assinged to Cyan," G'nir said after seeing that no one
had any objections. He nodded to E'naer, who wrote it down.
Genna took mental notes of all that was being said. She was here to
learn after all.
G'nir moved on until all the weyrlings were assigned to a wing. "That
was the last one," he said finally. "All is left is the seremony."
"I am sure Yanley will make sure there's a nice feast to follow."
Dragonsfall could do with more celebrating, Saibra thought. Things
were a little too cut and dry already.
G'nir deliberately ignored her, like he had done most of the meeting,
only replying to her when he had to. E'naer hadn't missed it and
sighed inwards. It didn't bode well if the Weyrlingmaster and
Weyrwoman were at odds.
Genna, too, sensed the tension between Saibra and G'nir, but knew
better that to comment on it. Maybe some time when she was alone with
Saibra and Teseada she would dare ask something about it, but now
obviously wasn't the time. At least the meeting had gone smoothly.
D'ale smiled faintly at Saibra's praise of his weyrmate and nodded at
G'nir. They'd never been close but had always worked well together. It
was unfortunate he and the Weyrwoman were at odds. "Thank you," he
said and gathered his hides.
