N'vanik

N'vanik

Since Meledei was the last one in the Records Room, it was up to her
to lock up for the night. As she stepped over the threshold, she
pulled the door closed behind her, then attempted to twist the handle.
It stopped short and the door refused to budge, so she released it and
turned to face the hallway. Before she moved, she lifted her arms and
stretched upward, a soft moan escaping as she did so. Sometimes she
wished that being a goldrider didn't require so much sitting and work.
At least the next day she'd be able to move about even after drills
because she needed to check over some of the schedules of various
lower caverns workers as well as take stock of a few of the storage
rooms. For now, though, her work was done for the day. She'd have a
little time before dinner, and a walk was in order.

Through the hallway, she greeted those whom she recognised and even
those she didn't when they acknowledge her. Outside, the sun was
lower in the sky, but still spread enough light to allow for a
lingering stroll. Setting on the path toward the shore, she settled
into an easy gait, only to recognise a figure but a few moments into
her walk. Meledei picked up her pace to catch up to the friendly
form. "Hey N'vanik!"

A smile spread across his face when he saw the goldrider. "Meledei,
how are you?"

"Doing all right, same old same old. How about you?" Meledei
shuffled alongside the Weyrleader, a man who had been sort of a
brother to her. As of late, they hadn't seen each other much, which
made her all the happier that they'd run into each other in the
corridor.

"Got myself tangled up in Orlaith's Flight at River Bluff," he said
with an amused shake of his head.

"I heard about that." The rumour mill was as active as ever. Meledei
was glad that nothing about her was going around - at least, not
anything she knew about at the moment. Although there were twitters
about what happened at River Bluff, the rumours were, for the moment,
mild and harmless, simply indicating what had occurred. "Glad you're
still our Weyrleader though."

"I'm kinda disappointed. I haven't been involved in a scandal in...
seems like a few months at least." His eyes sparkled.

"But that's a good thing, right?" Meledei giggled at the expression
on his face. "I mean, do you really want to have to deal with a
scandal?"

Not something like J'ackt causing problems with the holders, but
N'vanik did sometimes miss the gossip that surrounded him and Rhosyn.
"It does make life more interesting."

"It can also make life more annoying." Especially when the rumours
put people down - or cast dragons in a less than favourable light.
There were reasons why Meledei tried hard not to put much faith in
them, and if she did hear rumours, she also tried hard to go to the
source. Perhaps not always, but most of the time. "I'm just glad
you're still our Weyrleader. I'd hate to lose you to River Bluff."

"Do you really think I'd abandon you?"

"No, not really - at least, not on purpose." Not like a couple of
other goldriders who had made their choices without due consideration
of others. Thus far, Meledei and Kapera had stuck around at least.
"But what if you had caught her? What would have happened?"

N'vanik tilted his head. "I guess I'd have to choose an acting
Weyrleader for River Bluff. Or Rhosyn would. When K'sedel got better
he'd probably take over the leadership again. And maybe at some point
Rhosyn would murder me in my sleep." He snorted.

"I hope not. I'm glad it didn't, though. We need you here." Meledei
knew that keeping things stable as possible was important for the
Weyr. If N'vanik's lifemate had been outflown at Dolphin Cove, that
would have been accepted easily. To have lost him to another Weyr
because of a flight there, however, would have been much harder to
deal with. "We plan on keeping you."

"That's good to know, because I plan on staying." Sometimes he was
struck by how far he'd come, from unqualified outsider to well-liked
leader.

"Good. We wouldn't have it any other way."
