Characters: Irabel, Thayde
Description: Irabel shares news of her promotion with Thayde.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 6, day 21 of Turn 8
So much had happened, though Irabel hadn't expected the promotion. Granted, she wanted it, had worked toward that goal since she'd become a crafter. To finally succeed, however, she was almost shellshocked by the notion. At the same time, there was a hint of guilt in that she was benefiting from the ordeal that Thayde had gone through, even if it wasn't intentional. Regardless, the news was certainly of the pleasant sort, and the first person she though of sharing it with was none other than the dolphineer she'd helped to rescue.
After escorting him home the day prior, she'd checked on him that morning before breakfast. She'd wanted to do so again at lunch, but the time off from her duties had made work pile up, so she'd spent the time working as she ate. Once the work day was done, however, she hurried over to his quarters and rapped lightly on the door.
Being gone from his quarters for more than a month had left things more than a little dusty, and sandy. Despite the well built Hall that they lived in, living by the ocean always meant that sand was inevitably present. As Endarin had advised him, Thayde was taking things slowly, taking care of simple things, like cleaning his room when the knock came at his door.
Several times already he had been interrupted by different dolphineers dropping in to welcome him back, so he was pleasantly surprised when he opened his door to see Irabel. She had already come by once that day and he hadn't expected her again. "Hey, long time no see."

Irabel smiled at that, his easy manner so natural for him. She wished she could be like that, to take things the way he did. "I wanted to check on you." Again, and that was true. "And...I have some news." She glanced behind his shoulder, then at him. "May...may I?"
"Of course," he opened the door wider for her to come in, surprised that she was asking, since that would never have happened in the past.
Irabel passed by, eyes shifting to take in his rooms. She'd not been in them before, though there had been talk of cleaning them out after searches had proved fruitless. She noted the books, items too precious to be gotten rid of, and they probably would have gone into a library or records room somewhere. There were a few decorative items, but in general, his place seemed neat, but with an obvious touch of his personality. She'd been glad they had listened to her pleas and he could come home to what was familiar. After passing over the threshold, she turned to face him again. "Are you feeling all right?"
"Yes," he said slowly, as if he was unsure why she was asking. Was she going to say something to give him a heart attack? Closing the door, he turned back to her. "You said you have news?" He couldn't imagine what would have brought her to his quarters.
Her hands worked at each other, but it was not in nervousness. Rather, for once, a smile was tugging at the corners of Irabel's lips, as if she was trying to hold in her excitement, but wasn't doing it very well. "Endarin called me to his office."
Thayde's eyebrow arched, because he literally could not imagine Endarin delivering good news. "And?"
"I'm to walk the tables for Mastery in Salvage and Rescue." After a moment, Irabel realised what she was doing with her hands and finally clasped them behind her since she seemed to struggle with keeping them in line.
The man's eyebrows shot up, "That's awesome, Irabel!" He came over and wrapped his arms around her in a hug. "Of course, you deserve it."
The hug was a surprise, but the embrace was warm and inviting. After a second, Irabel's own arms drew up and encircled Thayde, her grip on him surprisingly firm. Her face was pressed against his neck and she inhaled the scent of him, that of the sea, despite being cooped up in the infirmary during recovering, mingled with a sweet spiciness that was subtle, but still noticeable. It felt good to have him hold her like that.
Thayde smiled as he pulled back from the hug, "Did you have any idea that he was considering promoting you?"
"No. None at all." Irabel shook his head, still reeling at the news, and glad she was able to share it with Thayde. "He just called me in and said he wants to do so at the next walking of the tables."
"That's great, Irabel. I'm happy for you." He was glad to know that Endarin recognized good talent.
"Thanks." Irabel's hands came together to play at one another once more. After a moment of silence, she finally spoke again. "Have you eaten?"
"Not yet," he admitted, sweeping his hands around at his quarters, "I got caught up in the joy of cleaning up sand."
"Do you...do you want to get something to eat?" The man definitely needed to get food into him. Thayde had never had much meat on his bones, but now he looked positively skeletal.
At the invitation Thayde's stomach growled audibly, "Well, I guess that's a yes." As a person who spent a lot of time in the water he was use to eating lots of breads and other foods that gave energy, but with the meager, lean fare they'd had on the island, his stomach still hadn't gotten readjusted to normal food.
"Would you...like some company?" After almost losing him, Irabel wanted to spend as much time with him as she could, but she didn't want to annoy him either. Maybe, eventually, she'd be able to get the courage to talk to him, but for now, it was best to get him something to eat.
"You already invited me out to eat, you don't have to ask if you can go." Thayde grinned and made for the door. "Come on, we'll see if the kitchen's made something I can stomach today, that chowder yesterday," he made a face and shuddered.
Irabel smiled, glad that he was willing to have her company. For a moment, she hesitated, wondering if she should talk to him, but in that instant of hesitation, her courage failed her and instead, she simply followed him into the corridor to head to the Dining Hall.
