The harper had a clean hide under her arm and a stylus behind her ear. Her boots were soft on the smooth stone floors as she walked through the tunnels. Eager to get this meeting done so she could sit in front of a warm fire, she made quick progress to the headwoman's office. Knocking twice, she waited.
"Come in! Hello, Nokala. How are things? Klah?" Yanley greeted with her usual warmth, holding up a fresh pitcher of klah. She gestured for the harper to take a seat.
Walking inside, she shut the door behind her and quickly made haste to get some of that klah. Reaching for a bit of cream, she poured it in and began to stir, savoring the smell as she sat down slowly. "Better now." Stretching her legs for just a moment, she took a sip and then smiled. "And you Headwoman? How does the Weyr fare?" Of course as a harper she had an ear to the ground, but it didn't hurt to ask one of the few women of the Weyr who might know quite a bit more.
"The Weyr fares well. Grumbles about the weather, gossips as much as always. Dragonriders come and go, babies get born, elderly dies. Of course, the gold transfers have everyone buzzing and speculating."
"There are always weather grumbles. I still haven't really gotten used to it, but thankfully I can always put on more fabric." It was a shame, having to cover up so much, but she supposed it didn't matter much. It could be a challenge-picking out layers and colors to fit together. "Hmm..I suppose the entire bloodline issue makes a bit of sense in some cases. However, knowing Genna I wonder how she'll do working with very different senior goldriders." Matter of fact, from what she'd heard, one of them had similarities with Genna's mother and that was still a strained relationship. Then again, she and K'ran would be in the same Weyr....
"Genna is well brought up and smart young woman. I'm sure she'll do well in any Weyr. I'll miss her though," Yanley replied. Genna was special to her, one of the young ladies she had been tutoring in Amber Hills Hold.
"Me too, but it's not forever so it'll be fine." Shrugging her shoulders, Nokala looked down at the list in her lap. "So...any new candidates coming my way for extra lessons?"
"Two," Yanley replied, "From the most recent patch of Searches. Both are from beyond /between/ backwater cotholds and have lacks in their teaching ballads. Irregular education, you know how it is with those small places that had to rely on traveling harpers."
Nokala nodded and made notes. "Do they show curiosity though? And the ability to pick things up?" Sometimes the children remained closed off, not wanting to learn. Other times since their development had been so minimal, they were unable to learn very quickly. "And a willingness to deal with a female harper?" That was also a problem when they were from the small distant cotholds.
"I really don't know them that well yet. The other one seemed rather sullen, the other one was full of questions, seemed bright and very excited about Weyrlife," Yanley reported what she had noted.
Making notes, Nokala wondered how that would go. Hopefully the sullen one wouldn't be too difficult. "Fair. When do I get to meet them?"
"When do you have suitable time? I can work it into their chore schedules," Yanley said.
Checking her lesson calendar, she mentally counted in her head. "Day after tomorrow, fourth candlemark after sunup." That was usually her morning break time she could use for planning or grading assignments as needed.
"Good," Yanley wrote it down too. "They will be there. If something else comes up, I'll let you know."
"Thanks. Oh and can you get me more wax to make the color crayons? We're running low again." She didn't mind making them herself as long as she didn't have to worry about making the wax. The young children needed to have their coloring time though or they wouldn't pay attention during the storytelling time when she'd try to get them to sing their teaching ballads to learn them.
"Wax, alright," Yanley wrote it down too. "Did the kids eat it?" She grinned. "Faranth knows Daley gets more colour to his mouth and clothes than to the hide."
"Some of them maybe gnaw on them some but the majority of them just bear down too hard when coloring and it uses them up quicker." She rolled her eyes, but kids were kids and there was only so much she could do.
Yanley chuckled and nodded, knowing what she meant.
"I think that was everything on my list for now. See you next sevenday?" Nokala stood up and took another drink from the klah, emptying the mug before setting it down on the opposite side of the tray to show it was dirty.
Yanley nodded. "Same time and same place," she smiled. It was easier to manage her schedule if she had regular meeting times with the key staff members.
