K'mai

K'mai

K'mai stepped into the weyr with a smile. "There's my little
hatchling!" He reached out his arms as he approached Sabia.

Sabia pulled herself up to stand on her stubby little legs, her face
liting up to a wide grin. "Ga-gah!"

She hold her arms up expectingly.

"I think she is trying to say K'mai...or not," Uetia grinned.

K'mai picked her up and lifted her high in the air. "Wheee!"

She shrieked with delight.

Uetia wasn't that delighted. What it was that made men want to lift
babies to the air? Her brothers were just as bad as K'mai.

K'mai spun the little girl around and then caught sight of Uetia's
expression. "I'm not going to drop her," he said with a smile.

"You better not to," she said omniously. She was usually pretty
carefree person, but when it came to her daughter, she was very
protective. "I know I'm being overly cautious with her," she added
with apologetic smile.

"She's your first." K'mai brought Sabia down and tucked her against
his chest. "A lot of people are over cautious with their first baby."
Sabia was his first, too but he was an honorary uncle to a few of his
friends' kids so he had some experience with babies.

"Well, it's a good thing she has experienced fostermother, she can
undo all the damage I do," Uetia grinned.

He laughed. "I think you'll do her a lot of good, too."

"I do hope so," Uetia replied and smiled tenderly at her daughter. "I
enjoy being her mother, which is quite surprise to me. I thought I
would be the last person with motherly instinct."

"What made you think that?" K'mai gently bounced the little girl.

"Because I was always one of the guys, never a girly-girl," Uetia
replied. "Give her to me and I show what she's learned."

K'mai passed Sabia to her mother. "I'm intrigued."

Uetia just smiled mysteriously. She placed Sabia to sit in the middle
of the floor and retreated until she was out of her reach.

"Come on, darling, show K'mai what you can do," she coaxed the baby.

Sabia's face crunched up when she contemplated her changed situation.
She liked to be held and bounced and now she wasn't. Should she start
to cry? You could see those emotions flicker on her face. Eventually,
she put her hands to the floor and lifted her bottom up. Then she
slowly and wobblingly straighted up to stand without support.

"Come on, there you go, you can do this," Uetia kept encouraging her,
holding her arms open in invitation.

She took one shuffling step towards her mother, then another...Uetia
was holding her breath. Third step and then Sabia tripped and fell.
She instantly started wail and Uetia scooped her up.

"Did you see? She can walk!" she asked jubilantly.

"Wow! Walking already." K'mai came over to kiss Sabia in the hopes of
soothing her.

"Gha-mah!" Sabia reached towards him, her hurt forgotten.

"Her physical skills are developing early, according to the
fostermother," Uetia said with mothly pride.

"I'm so proud of you little hatchling." K'mai kissed his daughter
again, then gave Uetia a one-armed hug.

"She's a little miracle," Uetia said with proud tone. Then she noticed
what Sabia was up to: starting to chew K'mai's knots. "She's either
teething again or getting hungry."

K'mai shifted to get the knots out of her reach. "Are you hungry Sabia?"

"Gh-gah," Sabia declared and looked hopefully around.

"Definitely hungry," Uetia said.

K'mai lightly tapped the little girl's nose. "Let's find you something to eat."

"Gaa!" she agreed whole-heartedly.
