C'rin

C'rin

R'kehr didn't like to spend his restdays in solitude (or his regular
days, either) so in the evenings he liked to hang around the Dining
Caverns in order to search for company. When he spotted C'rin, he
headed over to the other man. They were the same age and had shared
enough time in the trenches as Candidates. It had been a pity to be
one class apart in weyrlinghood.

"C'rin! What are you and Dasveth doing this evening?" he called.

"Drinking klah and... drinking klah." C'rin grinned, lifting his cup,
and then motioning for R'kehr to sit. Riveenata was busy with wing
duties, so he was occupying himself for the evening.

"I scored some extra cake, want a piece?" R'kehr asked, offering it.
"I still have an in with the kitchens."

"I wouldn't say no to cake," C'rin said, sliding his cup of klah aside
to make room for the plate.

"Good. Anyone who says no to cake is wrong and shouldn't be trusted,"
R'kehr said. He'd never had baking talent, but since his cooking was
excellent and he'd always been able to trade cooking for sweets.

"So how's being in the wings? Dasveth chased any greens yet? Thadath
started a few months after he graduated. I was ready for him to start
before," he quipped.

"Yeah, he's chased a couple, no catches yet, although it's not for
lack of enthusiasm." It never ceased to amaze C'rin at how different
Dasveth was when it came time to chase a female.

"Thadath's only won a single green." It had been almost sixth months
since graduation, too. "Makes me a bit jealous of the lady dragons,
they always get lucky."

C'rin tilted his head, "I don't know if I would say that. What if the
guy that catches is horrible? Or has serious body odor?" He had some
wingmates who could use some better hygiene practices.

"Ugh, I hadn't considered the odor question. Like some of those back
of the holds types. Ugh," he shuddered at the thought. "Makes you want
to commit to bathing twice a day."

"Right?" C'rin shook his head, some men were gross. "So, which girl
are you currently pursuing? There has to be a line for a new
bronzerider."

"Sarlea or Nytha are both pretty cute. And neither are looking my
way," he said with a sigh. Nytha was older and more experienced so she
probably had higher standards. Sarlea had been in his class and had
always been standoffish.

"Yeah, I have no idea how I got so lucky with Riveenata. She's out of
my league, I'm just hoping she doesn't notice." C'rin finished off the
cake on his plate.

He'd stood with the greenrider a time or two, been as surprised as
anyone else when she'd Impressed unexpectedly. He thought he'd seen
her hanging out with another young bronzerider.

"You two hooked up?" R'kehr asked with interest.

For a moment C'rin wasn't sure if that was a question he should
answer, but he was sure the slow grin on his face was telling, "Can't
kiss and tell."

R'kehr debated whether he should let on the gossip, but he didn't want
C'rin's heart broken. He wasn't sure how serious it was being. "I'm
just asking 'cause I saw her around with F'lin before she Impressed."

**F'lin, huh?** C'rin hadn't really noticed Riveenata until his mother
pointed her out, mostly because he'd been busy with his harpercraft
training and being a Candidate.

"I don't know, I haven't seen her with him recently, but she's free to
see whomever she likes." They hadn't really discussed any sort of
exclusive relationship, and C'rin was weyrbred through and through.

That sounded like good news. Whenever one of his friends got down
about a rejection or breakup, he liked to try to cheer them up. But it
was all to the better if C'rin wasn't going to be heartbroken.

"So you're not head over tails in love yet? Anything under 25 is too
young to weyrmate in my opinion," R'kehr teased.

C'rin grinned a little, "I mean, I like Riveenata... _a lot_, but I
don't want to be a fool in love like my dad so I'm just taking it a
step at a time." His father R'yin had never gotten over his mother
Ciara, even though she had completely moved on and weyrmated to
K'sedel.

"I'm impressed anyone in your family ever weyrmated, to be honest. I
always wondered why my mom never weyrmated, and then I Impressed. Our
dragons are a big enough commitment, anything permanent with anyone
else doesn't seem like it'd fit," he said.

"I don't know why my family surprises you, the Weyr is full of
weyrmates. My dad though, he's a hopeless romantic, can't get over my
mom or forgive her for being with K'sedel. It makes things real nice
and awkawrd. And then I have siblings that are babies." C'rin shook
his head, he loved his siblings, even if their dad was the
ex-Weyrleader, but it was still... different.

"How weird is that one?" R'kehr asked. "Do you ever have to do childcare?"

"Nah, they've got foster mothers for that, I generally steer clear
unless its one of their birthingdays or something. It's not that I
don't love my mother, we grab lunch sometimes, it's just that I'm not
particularly interested in being a part of K'sedel's family." C'rin
shrugged a little. "What about your family?"

"Mom's flighty and all over the place. I think she forgets about me
half the time. She was surprised when I wanted to come here with her,
but I thought maybe I'd have better luck Impressing here than Vista
Point. My other sibs are back there. And I dunno who my father is, if
she even remembers."

C'rin nodded, it wasn't an uncommon story for a weyrbred person, but
it still was vastly different than the way he had been raised. "I
guess you were right then, since you ended up Impressing here."

"Funny that the queen who laid Thadath's egg was a Vista one. I like
it at River Bluff, I don't know if I'd go back now." He sighed.
"Sometimes I wish I knew who my dad was, just so I could find out what
the other side of the family is like."

"Yeah, you could be the long lost son of the best bronzerider to grace
Pern.... Or he could be a loser, you never know." C'rin grinned.

"Or I could be a Lord Holder's byblow," R'kehr said. "Impressing a
bronze instead of inheriting a Hold as my due...oh wait, nobody would
give a Hold to a greenrider's son."

C'rin held up a finger, "I like that theory, then you might have some
hot holder sister somewhere."

"I might. Or maybe he was a Hallmaster and I'm secretly from a
Crafting line." The speculation, as ridiculous as it was, was fun.

"Well, maybe it's best to never know, then you can never be
disappointed." C'rin pointed out.

"That's true. Nobody could measure up to the heights I can imagine. or
live down to the depths of depravity I could also imagine." R'kehr was
impressed C'rin was putting up with his wherrydung.

The brownrider shook his head, grinning a little at R'kehr, "How do your
wingmates put up with you?"

"I am the life of the wing, just like I was in weyrlinghood," R'kehr
said, putting a hand over his heart. "I always have darts and games on
hand."

"I'll have to take you up on a game of darts some time then." C'rin
pushed to his feet, "As it is, I'm going to go hit up the bathing pools."

"Just tell Thadath any time you want to come by. We'll only kick you off
if girls are over."
