K'ran

K'ran

The message runner delivered the information that the harbourmaster
wanted to see him. K'ran didn't usually get requests from him and
whatever this was it sounded more important and interesting than
whatever wing crisis was going on at the time. So he headed down to
the harbor to go see what was going on.

It was refreshing to be outside in the salty air rather than inside a
cavern doing work. He was sorry when the walking ended and he arrived.

Tamah waved when he spotted the Weyrleader. He was at the dolphin pier
with the Weyr's dolphineer, although the dolphineer was still in the
water so you couldn't see him until you reached them.

K'ran headed over to Tamah. "Hello Harbourmaster, Journeyman," he
greeted when he saw the dolphineer.

"Weyrleader K'ran, thanks for comming. There's something strange going
on there," Tamah replied and pointed the towards the ocean. The sea
was choppy today. The dolphineer just nodded. He was strange even with
Weyr's standard, someone who was more comfortable with dolphins than
humans.

"Not a problem," K'ran said.

He frowned at Tamah's report, lookin out at the water. From his time
at Ista and Dolphin Cove, he thought he knew about the sea. The wind
and weather didn't seem enough to be this choppy.

"Is it related to the small groundshake?" he asked.

"Possibly, It got the dolphins edgy," Tamah replied.

"They are trying to warn us about something. Not storm though," the
dolphineer now opened his mouth.

K'ran looked over at the man. "Something bad?"

The dolphineer nodded. "I think they are leaving and they want us to
leave too," the idea seemed to disturb him greatly. "That pod has
lived in these waters for generations."

"Unfortunately, the dolphin's vocabulary is rather limited. All we got
out was: bad, bad coming. Must go, you go too." He made fairly
successful imitation of the dolphin's squeky voice. "It like trying to
get something sensible out of one Turn old kid."

K'ran frowned. The dolphins were smart enough to talk, and to warn
them. He wished the dolphineer had learned more specifics.

"Do they know when the bad is? Or where it's from?"

"I can try to find out more," the dolphineer replied.

K'ran racked his brain trying to figure out else might be severe
enough for this kind of warning.

"Please do," K'ran requested. "I can spread the word to the Weyr's
rankers that the dolphins tell us to be alert, but if we have more
details then I can give them more specifics."

The dolphineer nodded.

"The dolphins had been reliable source of pre waring when it comes to
hurricanes," Tamah said.

"Isn't it the wrong season?" K'ran asked. It was usually late summer
and early fall for that, due to the water and wind currents.

"Yes, but weather can still surprise," Tamah replied.

"It's not a storm," the dolphineer disagreed. "They can tell us about
those. No, it's something they don't have experience or words for."

"So all they know is it's dangerous and not safe to be here?" K'ran said.

That wasn't a lot to make an action plan on, not when he didn't know
what they'd be facing. But it was enough to let them know something
was coming.

"I'll go let others know, and we'll have the dragons listen for
anything alarming. Can you send an urgent runner if the dolphins have
anything more?"

"Certainly, Weyrleader," Tamah promised. "Or I can send my flit."

"That works too. I appreciate you giving us the heads-up about this.
No offense to your pod or your craft, sir," K'ran said to the
dolphineer, "but I hope the dolphins are wrong and it's nothing
serious."

River Bluff had had enough trouble with the golds lately - did they
need something else to add to it?

"So do I," Tamah replied and the dolphineer just nodded.
