Description: It's time for Vilarth to clutch.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 12, day 13 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: Bahji
Vilarth had been increasingly uncomfortable and cranky for the past few days, so when she declared, }:It's the time.:{, noone was surprised. Vilarth sent that message to her rider and current mate both. Then she started to dragg her egg-heavy bulk to Hatching Sands. The expectant humming started.
Lenala snatched the clutching gift she had gotten for K'lvin, a bottle of Vintner Hall's finest and made sure she was dressed for the heat of the Sands. Then she hurried to join her Gold. Just in time to see her tail end disappear inside the Cave. Lenala paused at the entrance to wait for K'lvin.
Xmrenth had sired clutches in the past, but this was the first at River Bluff, and it had been Turns since the last one. K'lvin enjoyed being behind-the-scenes of as the sire's rider, and he found Lenala easy to work with as well. He approached the entrance to the Hatching Sands with a small, black velvet pouch in his hand, a gift for the acting Weyrwoman.
"Milady," he said with a smile, as he offered her his arm, "shall we?"
"K'lvin, how is you Weyrmate?" Lenala replied and took his arm. "Just a minute, I check Vilarth first."
Her eyes glaced when she communicated with her Gold. ** Can we come in?**
}: Yes. Xmrenth! Drive those pesky firelizards away! :{
"Oh, boy, someone's being moody," Lenala said, ",but she doesn't mind us. Just the firelizards driving her nuts."
K'lvin was glad, he didn't wish to be a gold dragon's appetizer. "Bahji is well," he answered Lenala's inquiry.
In an immediate response to his queen's wishes, Xmrenth let out a menacing snarl that echoed around the Hatching Cavern, }:Out!:{ The firelizards froze, turning their heads quizzically at the bronze before disappearing with a 'pop!'
}:Is that better, lovely? Can I get you anything else?:{ Xmrenth fussed over Vilarth.
}: Just make sure they don't bother me. I don't like extra audience, :{ Vilarth replied, secretly pleased with his prompt response to her wishes. He was indeed a good mate. She concentrated to the task at hand, to push sand around to form a shallow pit for her eggs.
Lenala led K'lvin in, keeping a good distance from the broody Queen dragon. She found them seats from the Stands where they had good view to her nest.
"A little clutching gift for you," K'lvin said, giving the small pouch to Lenala. Inside was a golden charm bracelet with a single egg charm.
"Thank you," Lenala opened the pouch. "Oh, it's lovely!" she was delighted and put it right on to her wrist. "Here's for you," she gave him the bottle. "I do hope you enjoy it."
}; Pay attention :{ Vilarth demanded crankily. She was finished with her nest and now placed herself to lay the eggs into it.
"She's starting," Lenala nudged K'lvin. "This never ceases to amaze me," she whispered with reverence when the first glistering egg rolled in to the sand.
"Me either," K'lvin agreed. Getting to watch a gold clutch wasn't all that common, many of the queens were private about it, so you had to be the sire's winner to even get the chance to see it happen. "Wager on how many you think she'll lay?"
"Past few Turns her Clutches been around 30. I don't know if Orlaith's absence will encourage her to produce a larger clutch this time," Lenala replied.
"I bet it will, so I'll guess 35." Being the only senior gold at the Weyr, K'lvin was sure Vilarth and Xmrenth would produce a handsome clutch to bolster the wings.
"I say no more than 30," Lenala replied. Their ranks were full and Vilarth didn't look that big. She had looked larger when she had delivered her record Clutches. The Gold grunted and produced another egg.
"Let's see what we get then." K'lvin said good-naturedly, and settled in to wait.
"It's on," Lenala agreed and she also settled down to watch and admire the eggs Vilarth was now laying on steady pace.
K'lvin was disappointed, and certainly lost the bet when at the end there were only twenty-nine eggs on the Sands, he had really figured that Orlaith's absence would spur Vilarth to produce more eggs. After all, a Weyr only have two clutching Queens wasn't exactly ideal.
"Well, it looks like you won."
"Yes," Lenala replied but she didn't feel very victorious. She had hoped for larget clutch this time too. "I saw at least two larger eggs, perhaps they both hatch a bronze." She was trying to hide her disappointment.
Although she did an admirable job, K'lvin could detect a little of the disappointment he'd heard in his own voice. "I am sure they are," he said as he put his arm around Lenala's shoulders for support, "I guarantee that this clutch will be a hearty addition to the Weyr...." He hoped.
