C'rin

C'rin

The plateau was in chaos after the double blow of earthquake and
tsunami. It felt like there were too many people there for too small a
space, since it was full of dragons and their riders and everyone else
who lived at the Weyr as well, all trying to find space to gather and
sit and move supplies and tend to the wounded. Riveenata had been
pressed into helping deal with the injured by Master Jadirah, who had
checked her quickly for injuries then demanded her assistance with the
badly wounded.

They'd handled the severely wounded and now were cleaning up the
people who just had cruises or cuts. It was a relief to Riveenata when
the call came out that uninjured and interested riders who wanted to
do sweeps should come to the tent that had been set up for central
planning. She looked at Jadirah and motioned towards the tent. "They
want unharmed riders for sweeps," she said, then, compelled by duty,
said, "Unless you really need me."

"We have enough to deal now, you go see what they need," Jadirah said.

So Riveenata headed off to the tent and listened to the instructions.
People were being paired up and assigned to sweep an area of the
coast. Their job was to look for any indications of damage from the
tsunami and earthquake, to land if signaled for aid and see if it was
something they could provide. If they needed assistance the Weyr
wasn't going to be able to give, they had discretion for how to handle
the issue. Also, the major Lord Holders would need to be told about
the Weyr's condition, but that was being handled by bronzeriders.

They were given the ability to choose their own partners, so Riveenata
headed to C'rin when she saw him over by the table where a Wingleader
was passing out assignments, eschewing picking one of her wingmates.
Given its high proportion of injured riders at the best of times,
which this certainly wasn't, she was the only Cascade volunteer in
sight anyway.

"Partners?" she asked lightly.

C'rin felt exhausted, from a combination of emotional and physical
strains, but the idea of getting some fresh air away from the wreckage
of the Weyr was something he couldn't pass up.

"Partners." he said, slipping an arm around Riveenata's shoulders as
they walked towards their waiting dragons. The brownrider's paints
were stained up to his knees from where he'd waded around in the
receding waters earlier to try to salvage things out of the Weyr. "How
is your family?"

"Everyone made it out, though it was close for mother - she was with
patients in the dragon infirmary," she said, feeling a twinge of guilt
even as she said so. Her mother was why the Weyrleader was injured.

"What about yours?"

"They're safe." Dasveth had checked for him the moment the rocks had
started falling. He hadn't been able to catch up with any of his
family since then with everyone working. "I'm curious to see how much
damage there is away from the Weyr."

"I don't know how far a tsunami goes along the coast. I think that
might be easier to deal with than earthquake damage," she said. But
then she thought about the broken cothold from the hurricane earlier
in the Turn, and thought maybe water wasn't the better fate after all.
They might see something grisly.

"What area did you get as assignment?" she asked.

"The area between the Weyr up to Jade Harbor. They're right on the
coast like we are, I'm betting they ended up with some damage too."
C'rin said as Dasveth crouched so his rider could mount.

"I hope it's not too bad," she said. It was close and familiar ground,
and it made sense that it would have similar damage to the Weyr
itself.

She nodded and climbed onto Savith. The green had built up a store of
anxiety after the shocks of the tsunami and the earthquake, and she
leapt into the air and began winging her way quickly along the coast
towards Jade Harbor.

**Sweep up to, not race to,** Riveenata corrected sharply when it
looked like Savith wanted to outpace Dasveth. **We have to look for
anything notable.**

Savith reluctantly slowed her pace and dropped lower to peer at the
ground. There was debris scattered on the shoreline. But the green
wasn't spotting anything that looked like affected people-habitation.

Even though they were suppose to be on sweep, C'rin couldn't help
closing his eyes for a moment, just taking in the air on his face. It
was the first private moment he'd had since the call had come from
Rogueth that morning to start evacuating weyr residents.

}:The Weyr will recover. We are strong.:{ Dasveth assured him.

**That's what I thought too but after the earthquake....** There was
so much damage and... death.

Opening his eyes again, C'rin looked down and recognized that they
were now in Jade Harbor territory. It was easy to see that the water
was higher than normal up the coast line.

As they appeared over Jade Harbor Hold, C'rin could see people below,
it was obvious from their brisk paces that they were working quickly.
Water still poured from the great stone walls around the main Hold,
evidence that they hadn't passed through the tsunami completely
unscathed.

**Let's check in and see if they require anything.** He instructed,
signalling to Riveenata as Dasveth began a descent.

Savith followed Dasveth down. As they landed, Riveenata stayed quiet
and shifted her jacket to cover the Healer's knots. She would let
C'rin take the lead as a male rider of a higher-ranked dragon. No
telling if the holders would throw up a fit now, even if it would be a
poor time.
