Ueltin slipped in to the moonlight glade with the stealth of a shadow and grace of a feline. They were supposed to smuggle a young woman away from her abusive husband but after receiving the news from River Bluff, they probably had to cancel it. The tall harper was wearing a deep frown. He had sister there. He had sent his firelizard, Allegro, to check her out earlier today or was it already yesterday? He had received an image of Uetia with her arm in a sling, so something had happened to her.
"Ueltin," a voice whispered from the treeline. Kirlan had been waiting in the shadows until the Harper made his appearance. "What news from the Weyr?"
"They were hit by earthquake and tsunami," Ueltin replied and walked closer. "I heard it's really bad."
"Shards." Kirlan stepped out into the moonlight, running his fingers through his hair in exasperation. "It's not like our coastline wasn't effected either. I don't know how we're going to get anyone out, let alone _where_ to send them to."
"I sent my flit to scout the Wey, my sister lives there. What I got from his images, looked very bad," Ueltin shook his head with a worried frown. "I doupt we can send anybody there for a long time."
"I don't know if _anybody_ can leave Sunstone for a while. It's too soon to tell what damage was done here. I don't think anyone is getting out by boat any time soon." Kirlan rubbed his hand over his face in exhausted frustration. "Where is the girl now?"
"Waiting in a cave for us to extract her. Shard it, what are we going to do now? She can't go back," Ueltin replied.
"What choice do we have?" Kirlan shrugged helplessly. "We either have to find somewhere in Sunstone to hide her and try to get her out by sea, or try to get her out over land. The mountain roads probably weren't effected by the tsunami, but... Even if we did get her out, where can we send her?"
"No, but it's a bloody long trip," Ueltin sighed. Even for a harper used to hardships and long travels, crossing the Barrier range was no walk in a park. "Do we know any coastal minor holds who would be sympathic? Or just turn a blind eye?"
"None that I can think of right now... But..." an idea began to form in Kirlan's mind. "Do you think if it's bad in the Weyr it will be bad elsewhere, too?"
"I suppose the effect would diminish the father away you are from epicenter," Ueltin answered. "I mean I barely felt anything. So, if we get her to a ship bound to a Vista Point Weyr, she should be alright."
Kirlan shook his head. That wasn't where his mind had been going. "I mean, do you think it's bad enough that there might be refugees? Do you think the tsunami might have destroyed other Holds?" After all, if it had been that powerful here...
"I don't know," Ueltin hated giving that reply. He was a harper, he was supposed to know everything.
"Can we find out somehow? If people are evacuating other Holds, maybe she can hide among them." Just about _anywhere_ would be sympathetic to someone displaced by such a tragedy!
"I can send Allegro to places he's been before or to people he's familiar with," Ueltin replied. He had been in lot of places but not all of them. "I could send him scout those Holds along the coast I've visited."
"And I will find out about ships leaving Sunstone. Perhaps there is someone we can ask to take her in for just a little while." Someone discrete.
"Let's find out," Ueltin said. If they couldn't arrange anything else, he could ask his brother to take the girl to the Far Island Weyr. But he prefered not to involve his family in this.
"Is the girl alone now?" She must be scared out of her mind.
"I have Allegro with her, but yeah, she's alone," Ueltin replied.
Kalrin turned when he thought he heard movement in the grass. Thankfully it was just some farmers bovine shifting it's position, but it pressed on him the urgency of their situation. "Alright. Why don't you go back to the cave and see what Allegro can find out. I will head work on finding her a hiding place. There has to be somewhere she can lay low for a few days."
Ueltin nodded. He felt slightly better now that they had some sort of plan, even if it was rather rudimentary. "I'll let you know what I find out."
Kalrin knew what he was to do, and could already feel the pressure of time. "We have to move fast. We have to move the girl before the sun comes up or she will have to stay where she is. How can I find you if I sort out a place for her?"
"I'm stationed at Mountain cove cothold right now," Ueltin replied.
"Alright. I need to get back to Sunstone and see what I can find out. Is there anywhere closer to the coast we can move the girl to tonight?" It was doubtful that anyone would really be too nosy at a time like this, after all. There were far more pressing problems for the Holders to be thinking about.
"Seacraft Hall," Ueltin suggested. He could probably get the girl there before sunrise and his brother wouldn't hesitate to hide her for short time. The problem was that the Hall was likely suffering from the aftereffects of the disaster. He mentally kicked himself of not thinking about it earlier. They could also find a potential ship bound to North from there.
"All right. Send Allegro with news when you can." If only Kilrin had a Flit of his own!
"I will," Ueltin promised.
