K'mai

K'mai

Uetia had left Sabia with K'mai, he being one of the people she
trusted to look after her as well as she did. Then she went back insde
the Weyr to look for supplies. Blankets, dry clothes, food, medical
supplies and diapers for Sabia, anything she could scavenge. It was
dangerous but Sabia was wearing only a light tunic, she needed more.

She had nice bundle of thigs gathered when the aftershocks hit.

}: Get out! You need to get out of there! :{ Uetia never heard of such
panic in her green's mindvoice.

K'mai stood with a group of weyrfolk and rocked Sabia, trying to keep
the baby calm. Then the ground started to shake again.

Uetia abandoned the things she had collected and just ran towards the
nearest weyrledge. She nearly made it outside when a falling rock hit
her to the shoulder, hard. The impact sent her stumbling forward which
saved her life when rest of the weyr caved in. She did find herself
pinned, her legs caught under a rockpile. "Help!"

}:Sirjath's is hurt. She is trapped!:{

K'mai's heart clenched. Spotting a friend close by, he pushed Sabia
into her arms. "I'm sorry, can you watch her? Uetia's trapped." He
didn't even wait for a response before he ran toward Sebeth. **Please
be be okay. Please, please!**

}: Sebeth! I think we need human hands here! :{ Sirjath was trying to
move the boulders off from her rider but just couldn't get close
enough the rock pile, she was too large. When she tried to push the
rocks with her head, her rider cried with pain.

Uetia was trying to wriggle free on her own too, but the hit on the
shoulder had broken something, she couldn't move her injured arm. She
was in great pain and it made hard to concentrate.

K'mai's first instinct was to look for a healer, but they were all
busy. He didn't have time, Uetia needed help _now_. In moments Sebeth
had landed as close as he dared to Sirjath and the rubble. }:There,
Sirjath says she's there,:{ the blue told him as K'mai slid from his
neck.

K'mai hurried to where the dragons directed him. "Uetia, I'm here!" He
couldn't lose her.

"K'mai! I'm stuck!" Uetia called him. "Do you think you can lift that
rock enough for me to pull my legs out?"

"Yeah." He was sure panic would lend him extra strength. K'mai got his
hands under the rock and heaved.

Few millimeters was all Uetia needed to pull her legs free. Luckily
the rock hadn't rested on her with all of it's weight. "Thank's. Now,
help me up," she found herself unable to push up with one arm useless
and legs bruised. She was pretty sure her legs weren't broken but they
did hurt.

He got her good arm around his shoulders, grasped her waist, and
heaved. It was one of the few times K'mai wished Uetia was smaller.

Uetia staggered towards the dragons with his support. "Let's get
sharding out of here before more Weyr comes down on us."

~*~ Little later ~*~

Uetia couldn't prevent herself cursing when Drumilla propped and
probed her injured shoulder. At this rate Sabia's first word would be
foul one.

"Something is definently broken here and the shoulderblade may be
cracked too," was Drumilla's diagnose.

K'mai came back into the healer tent carrying Sabia. He'd gone to
fetch their daughter while Uetia waited to be seen. "I could find you
just by the sweet sound of your voice," he joked.

"Blame it for being raised by father and five brothers. Who thought it
was cute when little girl was talking like a sailor," Uetia replied.
Except Ueltin, who hadn't thought it was cute and had made her sit
down, learn proper language, read and write. So when she started her
harper lessons, she already knew her letters and got bored and
restless. Then the harper's branded her difficult and troublemaker.
Uetia realized her thoughts were wandering and pulled herself back to
present.

"All I can do right now is to give you a sling. You have to keep that
shoulder immobile so that the bones heal correctly," Drumilla told
her. "I can give you something for the pain but..."

"But we're short of everything," Uetia finished for her. "I'm can do
without." She turned her attention back to K'mai. "Do you think you
could find something for Sabia? Blanket or something? She'll get cold
when the sun goes down."

"How about I find us a weyr for the night? I've got friends all over,
I'm sure one of them can spare us some room." K'mai had lived at River
Bluff all his life, but he visited other Weyrs and knew a lot of
people that had transferred elsewhere.

Drumilla cleared her throat. "She's not going anywhere." She didn't
even have to poke Uetia's shoulder, just a touch was enough to make
the greenrider yelp. "There's still bleeding in her tissues, so no
/betweening/ until it's set and the bruising starts healing."

"You're cruel," Uetia complained. "Now I know why people became
healers, so they can hurt others legally." She considered their
options. Her brother and Nerylyn would love to take Sabia for awhile
but the Seacraft Hall was probably suffering from the tsunami too.
There was always her kin in Far Island. "You could take Sabia to Far
Island for day or two, until things here settle down. My family would
love to look after her. Either leave her with my father, uncle U'das
or cousin Seluda. Don't leave her to my brother G'el."

K'mai shifted Sabia and gripped Uetia's good shoulder. "I'll borrow
something warm to wrap her in for /between/ and I'll come back once
she's settled." If Uetia had to stay, K'mai would stay with her.

Uetia nodded. As much as it pained to be separated of her baby, it was
best for Sabia. Uetia could rough it out, she didn't have to.
