"How's your shoulder?" K'mai asked as he stepped into Uetia's weyr.
"Aching," Uetia replied. "And getting anything one as one-armed sucks
hard time," she added with sour tone. She has been cranky and
bad-tempered since the disaster.
"Oh, darling." He went over and gave her a quick kiss. "I'm sorry
you're having such a bad time." But she was alive, and things could
have been much worse.
"I'm terrible company right now," she sighed. "I hate being this helpless."
"Could I do something to cheer you up?" K'mai would be happy for the
distraction. He hadn't felt this gloomy since the terrible first
months after Thread returned.
"I don't know. I can't _do_ anything," Uetia sounded whiny.
"That's why I offered to do something _for_ you. I could get Sabia and
we could have a little family dinner here."
"That sounds like a good idea," Uetia replied. "At least she's adjusting to this move better than I am."
K'mai wanted to put on a brave face for her, but it might be good to unburden himself a little. "To be honest, I'm not doing so well either. I lost friends. I grew up at River Bluff and now half of it is rubble." He sank down onto the couch.
"You, me and everyone else from River Bluff," Uetia replied with sympathy. She sat down next to him. "While I didn't grew up at River Bluff, it's been my home since I Impressed."
"We lost so much. But I'm so thankful you and Sabia are safe." He reached out to squeeze the hand on her good arm.
"I'm thankful of that too. I couldn't bear losing Sabia," Uetia replied. While she had lost some friends, the people she cared most had survived. Unfortunately, some of them were now in different Weyr.
Thinking of his daughter lightened his heart and made him smile. "I'm so glad Sabia is in our lives."
"I'm too. I'm also glad you're part of her life," Uetia replied.
He put an arm around her and gave her a gentle hug, mindful of her injury. "I love our little family. Enough to come all the way to the arse-end of Pern so we can stay together." He smiled.
"Arse-end indeed," Uetia snorted. "How did we end up here and not like for instance to Dolphin Cove Weyr?"
"_That_ would have been nice." K'mai heaved a sigh. Then his expression turned mischievous and he leaned closer. "I guess we'll have to find ways to keep warm."
"You would figure out way to keep warm," Uetia said with little grin of appreciation. K'mai always knew how to make her feel better.
"And I know lots of creative positions to avoid your bad shoulder." He brushed a kiss against the side of her neck.
"You would. Have you met anybody interesting lately? To try them out with?" she said teasingly while his kiss made a pleasant tingle go thru her spine.
"I've met a few interesting people, but this is something I'm already quite knowledgeable in." He'd worked around injuries with his bedmates before.
"I know how knowledgeable you are," Uetia said and tugged his shirt with her good hand.
K'mai pulled off his shirt and began to carefully remove Uetia's. "And this is an excellent way to cheer us both up."
"You're sharding right about that," Uetia agreed.
