The carriage that took passengers between Green Valley and the main
Hold, pulled to stop. Verran had barely time to step closer when the
carriage door opened. Something flew right into his arms with
delighted: "DADDY! I missed you!"
"Hello, hatchling, I missed you too," Verran hug her tightly. His
little girl. "How was the trip?
"It was fun. Mom got really nervous everytime I was near riverboat's
railings. Did you know there's kids living in those ships? I made new
friends," she chattered cheerfully.
"Yes, I know," Verran grinned and let her down, so he could hold out a
helping hand to his wife. "Welcome to Garnet Valley, dear," he reached
to plant a kiss to her cheek but she turned her head away. So, not
even token gestures for the audience. And audience they had, news that
the new Steward's family was arriving had spread and people had
gathered to look. "I hope your trip was pleasant," Verran's smile
didn't reach his eyes, they were like glacial ice.
"It was alright," Ganice replied.
"Come, let me introduce you to the people," Verran said, having
spotted lady Arippa at the entrance.
Arippa smiled as they approached looking to Verran for the
introduction. "Welcome to Green Valley," she smiled.
"Lady Arippa, this is my wife, Ganice and my daughter Niccea. Ganice,
I'm pleased to introduce you to Arippa, the wife of our new Holder,"
Verran handled the introductions.
"Pleased to meet you," Ganice curtsied.
"Very nice to meet you too," Arippa smiled warmly. "I hope you enjoy it here."
"Thank you," Ganice replied.
"Why does daddy call you lady?" Niccea asked, straightforward and
curious like all young children.
Arippa grinned at the child. "Because, my grandfather was Lord Beneroy
of Amber Hills Hold. That is where I was raised. My uncle Zathris is
Lord Holder there now and my Aunt Benani is his Lady Holder."
"Wow," she was quite impressed by that.
"So Niccea, do you think you could bring your mother to my solar next
restday for tea?" Arippa's eyes glowed with anticipation at what the
invitation might mean to the family. If there were any lessons she'd
learned from her family they involved proper manner and inclusion.
"Sure," Niccea nodded.
"That would be lovely, thank you," Ganice replied, apparently cheering
up at the prospect.
"Wonderful," Arippa smiled at the small family. "Well I'm certain the
headwoman has made arrangements for your family Verran." She was
thankful for all the new people that had come to Green Valley
recently. It showed confidence in her husband's leadership and she
couldn't help but agree.
"You'll like the new appartment, Ganice, it's more spacious than the
last one," Verran told his wife and she just nodded.
Niccea however, was still watching Arippa and now blurted out the
question burning on her tongue: "Do you have children? Who I can play
with?"
"I _do_ have a little girl," she smiled. "Her name is Pippa. But she
is still too young to play with a big girl like you." She shared an
amused smile with the parents.
"Awww," Niccea was disappointed.
"Don't worry, sweetheart, there are plenty of other children of your
age to play with," Verran assured her.
"Yes there are," Arippa agreed. "And Harper school will be starting up
after Turn Over. You'll get to meet them all."
She nodded with cheerful "Okay."
"Come on, let's move inside," Verran suggested and gestured the
drudges to take the luggage.
"Very nice to meet you all," she smiled. "But I must go, I promised to
meet my husband for an evening ride." She grinned at the looks on
their faces. "My father, sent us a pair of runners from Amber Hills
and I'm very excited to try them out."
