Pierka walked into their weyr with food for their evening meal and
began unpacking the basket. She hummed to herself as she pulled out
the items including some fresh pieces of cake.
"Dinner's ready," she called.
"Oh good." Z'ku set his riding straps down. He greeted Pierka with a
kiss before moving to help her unpack the food.
She smiled at the kiss and soon they had all the food unpacked. She
slid into her own chair and reached for one of the serving spoons to
scoop out a serving of mashed tubers. "How are your straps coming?"
"Almost done, just a small repair." He poured drinks for both of them.
"Good," she smiled. "I may need a new flight jacket soon. Somehow the
seam under the arm is splitting. But then it is the same one I've had
since I was a weyrling. Probably time right?"
"Past time," he agreed. "I'm surprised it lasted this long."
"Well," she said with a sly sidelong look from under her lashes. "I'll
be alright with the maternity jacket for the next few months anyway."
His eyes widened. "Are you...?"
She nodded.
He let out a shout of joy and hurried around the table to hug her. "Oh
Pierka, I'm so happy!"
She couldn't believe the joy that filled her at his reaction. It was
so utterly different than when she'd told T'nom about their child. She
hugged him back and tears welled in her eyes. "Me too," she said.
"I would be happy however this happened, but the fact that you wanted
this, that we both chose this because we love each other, it makes
this even more special." Z'ku leaned down even farther to press his
cheek to hers.
"You wanted it too," she said softly but didn't let him go. "Kazom
will be so happy to have a little brother or sister."
"One of the benefits of fostering is that he never truly was an only
child so it's less likely he'll be jealous." His family told stories
about how his oldest brother was upset when his first sibling came
along.
"Yes," she agreed. There was no danger that her children would ever
feel all alone as she had been for so long. "And I'm so thankful for
them and for you." She looked directly into his eyes. "I don't know
what I'd ever do without you," she added softly.
"I feel the same." He kissed her temple. "I felt so hurt and unwanted
when we started our friendship. Now I feel like the luckiest man on
Pern."
"And I felt so abandoned and alone," she smiled. "Our friendship
turned into one of the best things that ever happened to me. I could
not be happier," she said. "Even though Lanniya is going to
Dragonsfall, I know her now and can see her any time." Her arms
tightened around him.
"I'm sorry she's leaving." Despite being angry at Lanniya for her
reckless, impulsive actions, Z'ku still liked the girl.
"It's for the good of the Weyr," Pierka shrugged. "And we're
dragonriders so, it's not really good bye. Besides, you know she'll
visit us a lot once the baby is born."
"She'll be so excited."
"She will," Pierka nodded. "But right now, our food is cold and I
don't care." She stood and took his hand pulling him toward their bed.
"Neither do I." They climbed on top of the furs, their limbs tangling
together as they kissed. "You're amazing and our baby will be
amazing," he said between kisses. "I'm going to show you just how
happy I am."
She grinned up at him with all the love in her heart. "I bet it will
be amazing!"
