Description: The Dolphin Hall celebrates new construction after the fire nearly destroyed it 1 Turn prior.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr, Dolphin Hall
Date: month 9, day 12 of Turn 9
Endarin felt nervous, not an emotion that often plagued the
Hallmaster. The last time they'd had a major event, a table walking
ceremony, half the Hall had burned to the ground. Now here they stood,
almost exactly one Turn later, looking at the pristine, new
construction of the Dolphin Hall. They had been fortunate that the
fire had mostly contained itself to the office and classroom building
and that the living areas had remained largely untouched.
The front entrance had been reworked to incorporate some of the
natural shells from their beaches into the concrete mixture that had
been laid between the new stones. New piers replaced the charred
remains of the old ones. The smiths had even sent a new Dolphin Bell
as a gift.
Stepping into the new main entrance, Endarin inspected the decorations
and people bustling about. As usual, Jylanya had outdone herself.
Delicious smells were wafting through the now, more open and airy main
hall.
"Jylanya, Naton," he stopped by the husband and wife pair, "it looks great."
Jylanya turned her head toward the Hallmaster. "Thank you," she
smiled. "We all worked very hard."
"Really?" Naton asked, looking up at the decorations with a quizzical
expression. "Those buntings don't look off center to you? I swear
the left side is off somehow..."
Jylanya elbowed him playfully in the ribs. "Don't you start," she chuckled.
"What?" he asked, not sure what he did to deserve that. "I was on
that ladder for a good quarter of a candlemark and I swear it's
_still_ not right."
Endarin tilted his head as he looked at the buntings, "Perhaps we need
fresh eyes." He looked about, "Apprentice Milga," he motioned to the
girl, "come give us your opinion. I believe a friendly, marital wager
hangs in the balance depending on your response. Look at those
buntings, do they seem in place to you?"
Milga cocked her head and looked them critically. "They look just
perfec to me," she said with a small shrug of her shoulders.
She was feeling self conscious and slightly nervous in her new gather
dress. Now that she started to look like woman instead of gangly
adolescence, she got all kind of attention. She had even been asked out
for date. She was turning into a beautiful, dark haired woman with
swimmer's toned, athletic body.
"It's settled then," Endarin declared. "I am going to go and greet
some of the arriving guests. Good work everyone," the Hallmaster
nodded to Jylanya and Naton.
"Milga," Jylanya smiled as the Hallmaster walked away. "You look
lovely today. Is that a new dress?"
"Yes, it is. Do you like it? The old one had gotten tight from
places," Milga replied. She didn't grow height any longer but she was
filling out otherways.
"I do," Jylanya nodded. "It's very becoming on you. Well," she said
reaching out for Naton. "We should probably go help Master Endarin
greet our guests."
Naton was still frowning at his bunting when we felt his wife's hand
reach for his. "Yes, you look all nice and fancy," he said, jumping
back into the conversation where his mind had started to wander.
Milga chuckled softly.
Out front, Endarin shook hands with some of the Dolphin Cove
dragonriders that had shown up for the opening, and he greeted
dolphineers who were stationed at Jade Harbor but visiting for the
reopening. It was good to see familiar faces, to hear laughter, and
see smiles. It felt freeing to open the Hall once again and not have
the charred remains of the fire hanging over their heads.
Once the guests had been shepherded into the main hall, Endarin took
his place at the head table and looked out over the many gathered
faces, all turned his way for the opening toast.
"Thank you all for coming out tonight to help us celebrate the
reconstruction of the Dolphin Hall," he paused for a moment as a
ripple of applause spread through the audience. "We would like to
thank Dolphin Cove for their support while we have been rebuilding, we
could not have done so without them." He raised his glance to the
dragonriders in the room. "I would also like to thank the dolphineers
who have lived here in tight, uncomfortable quarters for many months
while we've been rebuilding, and of course, I would like to thank
Headwoman Jylanya, without her we would have been naked and starving
these last few months." This earned a chuckle from the audience, as
well as head nods as people agreed.
With a smile and a nod, Endarin lifted his glass, "To the Dolphin
Hall. Please eat, drink, and enjoy yourself... but try not to burn the
place down, again."
Once the toast was over, Endarin sank into his seat, glad to have the
spotlight elsewhere as servers entered the room bearing food and drink
to each table. In the corner of the room harpers began playing softly,
filling the room with a lively atmosphere.
