"I hear congratulations are in order," Benna said cheerfully as she
plopped down across the table from Uetia. She set her tray down, glad
to have found a seat in the busy dining hall and even gladder to have
a chance to speak with the new wingthird. She'd been meaning to track
her down and offer her congratulations since she heard. She'd been
beginning to think she'd have to wait until they had wing drills or
something.

"Hi, Benna. Thank you," Uetia grinned happily back. "I can hardly
believe it myself."

"I know I was shocked when I found out," the younger greenrider teased.

"Now I got to boss you around with a permission," Uetia replied and
pointed her with a fork.

"They've created a monster," Benna gasped in mock horror before
giggling. "Seriously though! Congratulations!"

"I still can't get my head wrapped around it," Uetia was pretty much
repeating herself. "I mean, I always wanted to be wingthird. I thought
I would have to wait ten more Turns for it."

"You deserve it! You're as dependable as they come, everyone knows
that. Plus, wanting the position goes a long way." Benna speared
several slices of tuber on her fork. "Have they buried you in
hidework yet?"

"Not yet, I've barely started. First I need to get familiar with the
wing, the new wingleaders and stuff," Uetia replied.

"Well, that's good. A bit of a reprieve before you have to start
keeping up with records and reports and what-not." Benna wrinkled her
nose in distaste as she spoke. Her writing was still quite bad even
after five turns and she did not enjoy it when she had to do it.
Unlike when she learned to read and discovered that she was gaining
access to whole worlds of adventure and imagination which made the
boring reading bearable, she had found no such joy in writing. It was
a pain when she had to do it, and whoever was forced to read her work
probably felt the same way.

"Have you ever been apprentice? It's good practise for that," Uetia
grinned. She was not intimidated by the hideworks. She had learned to
read and write at the age of five. Her boisterous nature hid a keen
intelligence.

"Shards, no." Benna laughed. "Before I was Searched I could barely
read. I hid in the fields when the harper came around."

Uetia grinned at the image. "And my brother taught me to read before I
was old enough for harper classes. Not surprisingly, he's a harper
now."

"A few of my brothers really enjoyed their classes. I just never did.
Too much sitting around, I guess. I hadn't the patience for it." Benna
sipped at the juice in her cup, thinking about how things were
different in the Weyr. Being a dragonrider meant she was almost always
busy and the rare moments she had to just sit around were treasured.

"Well, if we were all alike, life would be pretty boring," Uetia grinned.

Benna laughed again, "And, depending on the person everyone was
patterned off of, pretty scary!"

"Yes, it would be," Uetia smiled and lifted her klah-mug in a toast.
"Well, here's for the differences and promotions."

"And the right person for the job!" Benna smiled happily at her friend
before clicking her juice cup against the mug in salute.

"So, anything interesting going on in your life?" Uetia asked after
their playful toast.

"Nothing at all. Well, I think Henerath will rise sooner or later,
and that's always interesting," Benna grinned, feeling well pleased by
the idea.

"Yes, Flight are always fun," Uetia replied. She couldn't wait for
certain young bronze to mature up and join Sirjath's Flights.

"Yes, they are. Though, more fun now. I remember the first few as
being a bit awkward afterward," Benna chuckled, remembering how her
hold-bred sensitivities had clashed with the reality of being a
greenrider the first few times her dragon had flown.

"Yes, for some reason K'mai seem to win many of Sirjath's Flights."

Benna made quotes with her fingers in the air as she repeated, "For
some reason?"

"Hey, he's fun guy and great friend but he's not the settle down -
kind of man," Uetia said.

"Well, flights aren't meant to pick out weyrmates are they?" Benna's
dragon had yet to settle on a favorite, not that she minded.

"You're so right about that," Uetia replied with a smile.

"Yep, makes them more interesting." Though it had taken her a while to
realize that.
