Lady Yanley

Yanley

Temmin knocked on the door he'd been directed to, trying to control
his nervousness. It wasn't like he'd never spoken to a Headwoman
before. Even the small mining hold he'd grown up in had a Headwoman,
she doubled as one of the cooks, but still. But, he'd known that woman
all his life and this was someone he'd only met briefly when he'd
first arrived yesterday afternoon.

"Please, do come in," Yanley called.

Temmin pushed the door open and peeked into the room before stepping
all the way in and letting it close behind him.

"Hello, Temmin, was it? How can I help you?" Yanley asked and beckoned
him inside. Remembering names of people she's met, even briefly, was a
trick she had learned during her Turns as Lady Holder. She put the
hides she was working with to the side.

"I, um, was hoping," he paused, clinching and unclinching his fingers
nervously. He scowled a bit at the mess he was making of this and made
himself blurt out, "I was supposed to apprentice at the crafthall
before I got Searched and they said I could still apprentice here."

"Ah, yes, apprenticeship is possible if the craft hall has a presence
here," Yanley replied. "Take a seat. Which craft you're looking to
join?"

"Mining," he said nervously as he took the offered seat. Now he was
nervous for a different reason. It hadn't occurred to him that there
might not be any miners in the weyr. Surely, with all the caves there
had to be some. The Search Rider wouldn't have told his parents he
could Apprentice if there was no one to Apprentice to, would he?

"I hope you like cutting stone. The only miners we have here are
working on carving out new weyrs," Yanley replied. "I can inquire if
they've willing to take an apprentice. There are some dragonriders
with minecraft background, but they don't take offical apprentices.
They might be willing to give lesson or two on their free time
though," she continued.

Temmin breathed a sigh of relief, "That's fine, Headwoman, thank
you." He'd helped haul stone and ore plenty of times, learning the
proper way to cut it would be a step up, and more importantly, he
wouldn't have to write home and tell his parents that he wasn't going
to be trained. Now, at least, if he couldn't Impress, he had
something.

"There should be no obstructions for you to apprenticing with them.
I'm under impression they would welcome the extra pair of hands,"
Yanley said.

Thinking of his father and the other minors back home, the boy nodded
in agreement before asking, "Who should I talk to?"

Yanley pulled out a scrap of hide and wrote a name on it. "He's the
master supervising the minecrafters," she handed him the hide.

The boy glanced at the name and then tucked the scrap into a pocket.
He wondered if he should go looking for the master right away to
introduce himself, or if it would be better to wait until tomorrow and
report at the appointed time for candidates to do craftwork.

"You still need to attend the candidate classes," Yanley reminded him.
"But when others are doing general chores, those with craft will be
doing craft related tasks."

He nodded again, "Yes, ma'am. That's the tenth candlemark, right?" He
squinted his eyes a bit, trying to remember the schedule he'd been
told yesterday.

"That's right," she confirmed.

He nodded yet again, glad he'd remembered correctly. Then, deciding it
might be a good idea to introduce himself instead of just showing up
for work the next day, Temmin asked, "Do you know where the master
might be now?"

"I'm afraid not. Although last time I talked with him, they were working on
mid-level weyrs," Yanley replied.

Temmin very nearly nodded again, but caught himself in time. "Thank you,
I'll look for him there."

"Good luck with your apprenticeship," Yanley said, obviously dismissing him.
She had plenty of work to do.

Recognizing the dismissal and needing to track down the miners, Temmin rose
from his seat and headed for the door. Just before leaving, he turned and
said, "Thanks again, Headwoman," before hurrying out.
