Z'al smiled as he made his way to the candidates barracks. He had been excited at the prospect of a picninc. He peeked into the barracks,
"Kirra you in there?" He knew she was sad for not impressing. Maybe this would make her happier.

Sunny popped up in front of Z'al and chirruped happily, cocking his head as if he was asking why Z'al was there. The little bronze flit hadn't gotten quite used to seeing the rider, but knew he wasn't a threat.

"Sunny, get out of his way." came a voice farther along in the barracks. Kirra's head stuck out from one of the bunks and smiled at Z'al. "Come here my handsome love. Have you come to release me from my pathetic state of misery." Her eyes were a bit red and they had a sad look in them, and
anyone could tell that the wet spots on her shirt were from tears.

"I have come to whisk you away from it all. First with my love and then with my invitation to a picnic tomorrow. You see I have a friend you have yet to meet. I was going to take my son and sisters on a picnic and wondered if you would want to go too." He smiled as he scooped her into his arms. "But, seeing you in such misery I must take you away from it. I shall tuck you away in my weyr and bring back that smile that has so stolen my heart on many an occasion." And he began to walk with her craddled in his arms.

The young woman couldn't help a little smile at his enthusiasum, but hid it with a small moan of reprimand. She may have been miserable but she still had some dignity, and being carried through the Weyr wasn't going to help.

"Let me down you silly rider!" she hit him lightly on the shoulder to emphasize her statement but to show him that she wasn't all that angry.

"But then you'd have to walk. You are far to distraught for that. I must take you up to my weyr and make you forget all about your sadness." He smiled as he refused to let her go. "Plus I have something to ask you when we get there."

Kirra gave up and stayed silent, leaning her head against him above his collar bone. "Thank you." she finally whispered quietly only for him to hear.

Once he had her in his weyr he gently put her on the couch and knelt beside her. "Kirra...I... I've been thinking. You see I need to tell you something." He knew he was stumbling. He was glad it was here in his own weyr then out there in the open. "I want you to know that I have come to love you. I think about you all the time. I know you want to be a dragonrider. I want you to know I want you to be happy. But, I want you to know I will still love you even if you don't. That will never change. I also know Nyinth will chase greens. I can't keep him from it. But, I could never love them as I do you." He smoothed his hair back and cleared his throat. He was nervous. What if she said no. "That's why I was wondering...If...you'd...like...to ummm...be my...weyrmate?" there he had asked it. Now it was up to her.

Kirra couldn't help herself from smiling as he stumbled through his words but when he got to his point her face went blank with shock. Did he really just ask her that? She knew that in his past he had not been one to make a commitment like this, that this was very different, very important to him. He could see the idea turning itself around in her head as she thought of the effects this would have on her future, especially as a dragonrider. Then it hit her. That didn't matter to her, not as much as Z'al did. He was giving her a chance to be with him as much as possible, a chance to be happy.

A smile spread across her face and an excitment from pure happiness lit her eyes, "Yes, of _course_!" She sat up and pulled him into a fierce hug, "Oh, Z'al I love you _so_ much! Of course I will!"

Z'al's breath exploded from his lungs. He had not known he had been holding it. Z'al's face split in a smile. He had been hoping she would say yes. He stood and pulled her up with him. He spun her about in her arms. "I am so happy. I can't wait to tell the whole weyr." Nyinth bugled his rider's
happiness.

Kirra laughed joyfully as he spun her around, and when he finally stopped she wasn't sure whether she was light-headed from the spinning or from the prospect of getting to live with the person she loved the most in all of Pern.

Once she had steadied her head, she looked around at his weyr a bright smile stuck on her face. She would no longer have to deal with sleeping in the candidate's barracks, she woould have a place to be alone with Z'al, alone with her thoughts. Then she remembered something, "Z'al did you say, earlier, that you wanted to take me on a picnic?" She didn't know how that could have intruded upon her thoughts of happiness, but a picnic seemed a great way to celebrate.

"Well, I've a very good friend that realy wants to meet you. We thought a large picnic would be a great idea. Zamley will be there too and maybe my sisters. If you wanted to come." He couldn't stop smiling.

"I'd _love_ too!" she had been wanting to meet Z'al's son for a while now.

"Good, on this rest day we shall celebrate. But, now let us seek out your belongings and bring them here. For now this is your home." He smiled.
