Having spent last night in a tavern with H'lim, Mealden had gotten bed
way too late and was sleeping in late too. He woke up when two
children jumped into bed and landed on him.

"Wake up daddy, or you miss breakfast!"

"Ouch, careful there, daddy's having a bit of a headache."

"Why?" Ede asked, trying to snuggle under the cover with him.

"I drank too much last night," Mealden admitted.

"How can you get headache from that?" the little girl asked.

"From drinking beer or wine, stupid," Merien said smugly, feeling
superior knowing that. He was barely Turn older than his little
sister.

"Don't call your sister stupid," Mealden scolded before raising his
voice to call his wife:"Darling, there's pair of horrible brats here,
whose are they?"

"Yours! I don't have horrible brats!" Riendra called back from the kitchen.

"Your breath stinks, daddy," Ede complained.

"Oh yes? Well, you tickle," Mealden said and turned to attack her with
some tickling. Lost's of squealing and giggling followed.

A quick bath, breakfast and two mugs of klah later Mealden was
starting to feel normal again. The children were preparing for the
harper classes and he could hear the squabble in other room.

"Aren't you in a hurry to work?" Riendra asked when he still lingered
at the table.

"Nope, there's only one stone wall to build, it's quiet time for a
mason," Mealden replied bit wistfully. He had been involved in
building the new Harper Hall, which had been interesting and time
consuming project that challenged his skills. But since it ended he
had been growing restless and dissatisfied (as a crafter, his family
life continued to be great).

"Did I wake you up when I came back home last night?"

"Yes, you did," she replied, cleaning away the dirty dishes.

"I'm sorry."

"That's alright. It really doesn't happen that often. Did you have
great time with your friend?" Riendra asked.

"Yes, we had," Mealden replied. He was aware that his wife was not
overly fond of his bluerider friend and it mostly stemmed out of
jealousy. He was also aware that what H'lim felt for him went beyond
friendship. But Mealden was devoted to his wife and just didn't feel
that way about H'lim.

"I heard something interesting from him," Mealden said and started
helping her. . "You know how after the earthquake, they divided the
River Bluff's territory and rides between neighbouring Weyrs?"

"Yes?" Riendra replied with encouraging tone. Whatever she thought
about her husband's friendship with dragonrider, at least she
appreciated the gossips they got from all over Pern.

"Apparently the strain is getting too much to them, covering all that
land, so they've planning opening a new Weyr to River Bluff's former
territory. Think of it, a brand new Weyr, built from scratch,"
Mealden's eyes shone with excitement.

"A great opportunity to a crafter who knows how to shape rock,"
Riendra knew her husband well.

"Yes, just the kind of large, long term project which could lead to
master's knots," Mealden had earned his seniour journeyman's knots
from the work he had done rebuilding the Harper Hall.

"And you're considering it," Riendra said with sinking feeling.
Mealden wrapped his arms around her waist and held her close. They
were both natives to Emerald Falls Hold, Riendra being a harper's
daughter, Mealden a cotholder's son. Mealden had spent some Turns in
minecraft Hall in Garnet Valley, outside that, they had always lived
here.

"Yes, but they haven't even found a location to the new Weyr yet, not
to mention started to recruit crafters," Mealden said. "It's worth at
least giving some thought." He knew the right spot in her neck to kiss
her.

She sighed, her body turning soft against his.

"We'll think about it," she agreed and then glanced the time. "Oh,
better get the children going or they'll be late from the classes."

"I can drop them off on my way to work," Mealden promised.

"Good, then I can get start washing the laundry."
