Mealden took a few steps backwards to see the result of his handwork. There, over the arch of a doorway, a dragon spread his wings protectively. He wondered if anybody would ever notice it. His craftsmanship tended to include details like that. He had seen the shape of the dragon in stone and of course he had to carve it out.
"So, what do you think of it, Aurea?" he asked his firelizard. The young gold was perching on his shoulder and made an indifferent sound.
"Right, not much a friend of art, aren't you," he reached to scratch her fondly.
There was a loud crash, yells and cries for help from the hallway behind him. Mealden swirled around to see. A part of the wall had crumbled. Unfortunately, an apprentice had been caught under it. The boy was half buried by the rubble.
"What happened?" Mealden rushed to help.
"He hit a weak spot in rock and it fell," another apprentice said, sounding shocked.
Mealden leaned to inspect the injured boy. Aurea took one look of him, squeaked and took to air, popping /between/. Well, Mealden couldn't blame him, she was still very young. The apprentice was conscious and crying with pain. "Calm down, we get you out of there." He was buried up to his waist, the largest rocks the size of a man's head. He gestured the other apprentice. "Help me to lift them off from him. What's your name?" he addressed the trapped apprentice.
"Serken," the boy grunted.
"Well, Serken, hang in there, we'll get you out in no time," Mealden kept his tone more cheerful than he was feeling. Who was their supervising journeyman and where he was? He hoped for Faranth's name it wasn't supposed to be him. He did not remember having apprentices assigned to him.
Once they had cleared the rocks out of the way, it became apparent that Serken needed healer. Even Mealden could see his leg was broken. The second apprentice started to look a little green around edges and Mealden was just about to order him to fetch a healer, when he saw Aurea returning. She was flying along the corridor, accompanied by blue firelizard. They were followed by a young woman, running full speed. She wore healers tunic and knots and carried a bag.
Once Drumilla reached the scene of the accident, she had to stop and catch her breath before she could speak. She really needed practice her running again.
"What's going on here?"
"He's injured, got rocks falling down from the wall on him. We have cleared them off him," Mealden replied. Aurea landed to perch on his shoulder.
"Was it your idea to send the firelizard for help?" Drumilla asked and kneeled to inspect the boy.
"No, I think she figured that out herself, she's such a smart girl," Mealden replied and gave Aurea a complimentary scratch. The gold chirpped smugly.
"Firelizards can be smart, especially queens. I've seen her around and Storm seems to have joined her court. I'm journeywoman Drumilla by the way." She was quite capable to work and talk at the same time.
"I'm journeyman Mealden and this is apprentice Serken."
"We need stretchers to get him out of her," she said after making her triage.
Mealden nodded and sent the uninjured apprentice to get the stretchers after Dru had given him instructions were to find those.
Drumilla gave the injured boy a sip of fellis from a vial in her bag and started to apply a first aid. That leg needed to be stabilized for transport. She recruited Mealden's help. They needed to set the bones so they would heal straight. Mealden's job was to hold Serken still when Drumilla pulled the injured leg. Despite the fellis, the boy cried out with pain.
"I'm sorry about that, it will be better soon," Drumilla assured him. She applied temporary splint and bandaged the injury.
"I think he fainted," Mealden observed.
"That happens. Do you know how to watch out for signs of shock?" Drumilla said and asked.
"Yes, I do. Accidents like this do happen to minecrafters now and then. We all got some sort of first aid training during our apprentice days." Of course, theory was always different than applying it in real situations.
"You're doing well, you've kept calm and it's always the most important thing in these situations," Drumilla said.
"Thank you. And now I know I can count Aurea and send her for help," Mealden replied and scratched his firelizard again. She was turning out to be very useful.
