Approaching the Mindhealer after her own duties, Urlene resisted a
yawn and forced herself to alertness. "Olwinna, do you have a
moment?"
"Hi, Urlene, sure I have," Olwinna replied and closed the book she was reading.
"I'm sorry for interrupting your free time, but I need to speak to
you about the brownrider L'keri from Dragonsfall. He's in our
infirmary thanks to an accident he had when he was drunk. I received
his records from his Weyr and he has a real problem with drinking.
Right now, I'm drying him out." Urlene sighed. "Last night he started
hallucinating, which isn't unusual, but some things came up.
Apparently he's lost a loved one, a woman, and he blames himself.
Can you work with him? I think it might be a reason for his drinking
problem."
"Sounds typical," Olwinna remarked. "Yes, I'm willig to work with him.
But it only helps him if he's ready to accept my help," she cautioned.
"Many people who have drinking problem, won't even admit they have a
problem, not to mention accepting help for it."
"He's not at the point yet of accepting it." Urlene admitted. "But I'm
hoping after this, he might be willing to accept help. If you can see
him as soon as possible, I'd appreciate it." She yawned, rubbing an
eye wearily. "I've been staying with him to keep an eye on him, and
quite honestly, I'm exhausted by it."
"Get some rest, don't burn yourself out. Caring too much is a risk in
our craft. I'll check him first thing tomorrow morning," Olwinna said
and promised.
"I know. Typically, it's not a problem for me. I'm able to distance
myself very well. I think I may be coming down with something." Urlene
sighed, then shrugged. "I wouldn't be surprised. Thank you, Olwinna, I
really do appreciate your help."
"Yeah, like with humanity," the petite mindhealer quipped. Urlene did
have the reputation of being cold and distant.
The comment stung more than she wanted to admit. Urlene blinked and
decided not to respond to the quip. "Yes, well, I appreciate your
help. I'll see you tomorrow, Olwinna. Please keep me informed on your
progress with him."
Olwinna instantly regretted her quip, some people could take them,
some were more sensitive. And she actually liked Urlene. "I will," she
promised.
"Thank you." Urlene inclined her head with a brief smile before
turning and leaving. It was true that she didn't always connect well
with people, but perhaps it was perceived as much worse than she
realized. It was something to think about.
