Benamil

Benamil

"Still no luck little brother? Too bad, the last one was rather
attractive." Royan leaned aginst his the door of his brother's office.

Benamil looked up from the reports he was trying to read. Inwardly, he groaned, and profoundly wished he was somewhere...anywhere else.... "No, Royan. Um...still no luck." She _had_ been rather pretty, but that was all.

"You know, when I was your age I was married with a child on the way. What's taking you so long?"

"I....er...well....maybe I just haven't found the right one?" He hated this. Hated the constant reminder that he just wasn't as good as the rest of them since he couldn't seem to find a girl who could stand him for more than five minutes. He was a little too...eccentric. "And I don't have your charm, Royan." He said the last with a smile. It was absolutely true.

Royan smiled. "You'll find someone , mabye one of Pyunn's younger
sisters?" he suggested. Pyunn was a good wife and mother, her sisters coudn't be too diffrent.

"Oh...er...well...I suppose it couldn't hurt to meet them..."

"I'll send my brown with an invitation."

"Um..so soon?" Benamil honestly looked ill at the thought.

"Next restday better?"

He knew he couldn't put if off forever..."Whatever you think best, brother...."

"I was hoping you'd say that. You know Amber Hills needs children, which means you need a wife." Royan smiled, but his tone was serious, with nine children of his own he felt he'd done his duty and would like to see other do the same.

And with Royan trying his best to repopulate Pern.... "If you say
so...." Benamil shrugged. "But I'm not marrying anyone who isn't
willing." He would put his foot down on that. He didn't want to force some poor girl to be stuck with him in an arranged marriage if she didn't want to be.

"I never suggested that, just that you have a chance to meet one of two. My wife would be very pleased to see her sisters happy."

"Oh...er...well...of course. I suppose meeting them couldn't hurt." Except his pride, once they rejected him...like all the others had. But that was an old, familiar ache, and one he could deal with.

"You'll find some eventually little brother, After all I'm twice your age."

He wasn't entirely sure what that was supposed to mean, but he
supposed it was intended to be comforting. "Thanks, Royan. I
appriciate the effort you are making, truly."

"What are you working on?" he asked politly, one could only push a subject to far with his reclusive brother.

"Reports. Um...er... it's a more accurate list of what cotholds have what type of beast- numbers and lineages. The records of bloodline we had were a bit out of date- if breeders aren't careful, there is an accidental threat of inbreeding."

Royan nodded, he knew all to well the dangers of inbreeding, he was a beastcrafter afterall. "Any lines running to close?"

"Some. I'm a little worried about the runners of some of the more
remote cotholds- they don't have as much interaction as the closer ones to the Hold do- their choices for studs are limited out there. If they keep on as they are- who knows what we'll end up with?"

"I may have a word with them then. It's easy to forget how things can turn out if your not careful."

"I've mentioned it...but coming from you as well, they might take heed."

"What they'll head is being tld that _we_ will not asiste them in
replacing stock they lose through their stupidly." he reply drooly.

"Oh..um...of course," Benamil said."What time would be best for you?"

"Er...ah...for talking to the cotholders?" he asked, hoping his
brother meant that and not their earlier topic of conversation.

"Both, though not on the same day, Pyrunn would drive me between if I showed for a family dinner after spending all day with the beasts."

"Oh." Now if he met a girl who didn't mind that....

Royan glanced out the window, checking the shadows, "I need to go, we planned on traning a few two turn olds today and I'd like to be there."

"Oh, um, sure. Sorry to keep you so long, Royan."

"Quite all right, after all I came to you."

"Oh...er...so you did."

"Good afternoon brother." he replied hiding a smile.
