Lax, satisfied, and her legs feeling like noodles, Enamra listened
to Thayde's heart as his chest rose and fell. Had it been four times,
or three? She couldn't remember, but Thayde had made she that she
realized how much he'd missed her. She rubbed her cheek against his
chest and sighed, a smile pulling her lips up.
Thayde was exhausted but sated, finally, of his need to prove to
Enamra that she had been the only one on his mind for the past
fortnight. His fingers trailed along the smooth skin of her rounded
shoulder. "Mhm, I've thought about that every day since I left."
"Mmm. That exactly?" She lifted her head just enough to look at him,
her satisfied smile still on her mouth. "Every day?" She nuzzled his
chest. "So did I."
That made his lips quirk a bit with a smile. "I'm sorry I was angry earlier."
She sighed, her brow furrowing. "I was too. I still am, but not at
you. She's... mean. She reminds me of Hista a little bit." She let
her fingers trail over the skin of his chest. "Thayde...if she was
your friend, why is she acting like this? If I cared about someone,
I'd want them to be happy. Why is she so upset at you?" She finally
lifted up on her elbow to look at him, her face framed by a cloud of
mussed hair. "And what if the baby is yours? I know you'd love the
baby, Thayde."
"I want children with you, Enamra, not just any child." Thayde said,
not caring if that sounded callous. "She and I were friends, but she
wanted more than I did from our friendship. She feels scorned because
I've chosen you. She's jealous of you."
"Jealous? Of me? I'm not anything special." Enamra frowned, staring
down at his chest and thinking as she nibbled on her lower lip. "I
just...I don't want to be the reason that you're not... you wouldn't
have married me if you hadn't felt you had to. I just keep thinking
that if this had happened without us being married, you would have
married her to do the right thing. You did it for me. And you both
have more in common and..." She sighed. "But we are married. I know
it's wrong, but I wish she'd just go away to another Hall and never
come back."
"Look, we can't change the chain of events that led to our marriage,"
Thayde said, "but I love you and you are the wife I want. It doesn't
matter what 'could have been' if things were different."
"Is she staying here?" Enamra didnt like the idea of Jalodwyn
constantly around Thayde or seeing her around the Hall as a constant
reminder. And there was another issue, a pressing one. "And I'm not
pregnant. I mean, nothing took before I started the teas."
"That's a good thing, right? You wanted to wait a bit before being
pregnant." He recalled their conversation and how she had fears of
going through another pregnancy. "As for Jalodwyn, I'm not sure what
she will do next."
"Yeah. I did. Will you have to work with her? I heard her yelling at
you in front of everyone." She rested her chin lightly on his
shoulder. "Everyone's going to be talking about us again."
"Maybe," he agreed, Jalodwyn certainly had been yelling loudly enough
for anyone even remotely near them to hear. "But if we continue on
with our daily lives as if nothing is amiss then it will die down. We
only give legitimacy to her claims if we act differently."
"I don't want you working with her." Enamra admitted softly. "Can't
you ask Endarin to make her go back to Opal Cove?"
"I will ask him about her scheduling and see how long she is stationed
here." Thayde said, although there would be no guarantee that the
Hallmaster would do anything about it. "I need to get dressed and go
see the Hallmaster anyway, I am supposed to report in on the trip."
A lower lip immediately thrust out. "Tomorrow morning, Thayde. You've
been gone two sevendays." She kissed his chest softly. "You need to
bathe and sleep... right next to me."
"Well, I probably could put it off until the morning... if I can
convince my wife to wash my back...."
Enamra blushed. "Maybe we could take a bath together."
Thayde's fingertips brushed down her spine. "That's what I was hoping
you would say."
