It was a long and laborious process on W'ser's end. The dragonhealers
working on the wingsail managed to stitch, clean, and repair anything
that needed it, but the disinfecting and cleaning of the rake marks down
Rogueth's chest and the tedious care of the stomach took some time. By
the time W'ser was at a stopping point, his shoulders felt knotted and
his head pounded from the focus he had been maintaining for so long.
"Well, K'ran," W'ser said, eyes weary, "right now everything is patched
up. We will have to keep an eye on the intestines. As far as I could see
they were not damaged, but now that all of the excess ichor has been
mopped up, we'll be able to tell if they're leaking. The gouges on his
chest are deep, too deep to stitch, so we're going to pack them and then
they'll have to heal from the inside out. Stitching them might not allow
for swelling of the tissue and then we wouldn't have anywhere for the
blood to drain. He'll be grounded for recovery for a couple of
sevendays, at the least, before considering flight. And that's _if_ we
managed to stave off infection."
K'ran had helped out as asked to convince Rogueth to shift his wing or
body to make access easier. The rest of the time he'd fallen into a
trance-like communion of strength sharing. Despite the numbweed working
on the edges being sewn together, there were parts where he continued to
feel pain. Since unlike humans, dragons couldn't take fellis for pain
relief, it was going to be an uncomfortable recovery.
Hearing W'ser's prognosis, he revised that. A _long_ and uncomfortable
recovery, and one here. The idea of going back to Barrier Lake without
his dragon was unfathomable, after all. That reminded him that he
wondered about the aftermath of all of this. Rogueth was drowsing as
best he could, so he didn't want to trouble his dragon.
"I suppose I'll be staying at Dragonsfall awhile, then," he said.
"Who should I speak to about a place to sleep? And will he be kept here
in the drgon infirmary, or can he be moved to a recovery weyr for a
bit?" He knew the ground-level recovering ones were limited and didn't
know if they were all full up. If he had to he'd sleep in an infirmary
cot by the wallow for as long as it took.
"You don't have to talk to anyone about a place to sleep," Saibra butted
in, arriving from behind K'ran. After helping with the wing she had left
while W'ser continued working. "One of the recovery weyrs has been
cleaned up for you, and Chioneth is here to assist Rogueth in getting to
the weyrcouch there."
K'lvin rolled his sleeves back down. "I can go get any of your things
that you need from Barrier Lake."
""If you could bring the box on my desk with the inks and writing tools
I'd appreciate it," he told K'lvin. "And if you could brief...whoever
the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader are about this, I'm sure they're going to
want to know what's going on, likely to come out here to resolve the
situation."
To Saibra, he said, "Thank you, Weyrwoman. For everything. I don't know
if Rogueth could have kept handling Aglayath if she kept fighting after
the lake, and Chioneth was critical for that and for keeping Rogueth
here. I don't know how I can repay you."
"I'll return shortly," K'lvin assured K'ran with a nod of his head
before turning and looking for Xmrenth, who was flying down from the
upper cliffs.
"There is no need for repayment. This is what fellow dragonriders, and
friends, are for. Come on, let's get Rogueth settled and you something
warm to eat." Saibra said, even as Chioneth and Branth moved to support
Rogueth and help him move into the weyrcouch where he would remain for
the duration of his stay.
"Thank you much," K'ran said, swaying slightly as he went with Saibra.
The mental exertion and the lack of food had taken a huge toll on him,
he realized dimly.
"The new Weyrleaders, they'll want to speak to us I'm sure about what
happened, and deal with Aglayath and her rider, and..."
Saibra put her arm around K'ran's shoulders, guiding him toward the
recovery weyr. "If one of Barrier Lake's new leaders shows up and tries
to talk to you before you've had a meal and a chance to get some rest,
I'll toss them out of Dragonsfall on their heads. Dragon injuries don't
just affect the dragon. You have been through a lot today and you have
shared in Rogueth's trauma. You should eat and rest so you don't go into
shock."
"Food it is," he said. "But can you tell me - who won? Does Chioneth
know yet?"
"Riyanth rose, Yumath caught, just like they'd hoped, I believe." Saibra
told him.
"A good pair," he said. If he couldn't win...D'hol was a good choice, he
thought.
They arrived at the weyr and he gratefully sank into the couch. "I
promise I'll eat, Weyrwoman," he said meekly.
Saibra crossed her arms over her chest, glancing about the weyr once
again, even though she had just checked it earlier to make sure that
K'ran would have everything he needed. "I hate leaving you here alone
like this, K'ran. Is there someone from Barrier Lake, or anyone you left
at Dolphin Cove, that you'd like for me to fetch to keep you company?"
K'ran thought about it for a moment. Who he was close to was... K'lvin
was already on his way back to Barrier Lake for him. All bronzeriders,
like F'lin, would be needed by the new Weyrleaders. Saidrene might...but
he couldn't ask Saibra that, he felt with a flash of understanding.
There was one obvious choice who wouldn't be needed in the next few days
- at least, not by the Weyr - and hopefully he didn't upset the Hold too
much.
"My twin, Corran, at Amber Hills. He has duties as a guard but perhaps
he could be spared."
"I'll send for him immediately," Saibra said, even as the sound of
footsteps revealed a drudge coming through the entryway with a tray of
warm food and drink. "I'll leave you alone to have your meal in peace."
"Thank you again, Weyrwoman. I'll eat and be ready to report when the
time's needed." Perhaps he'd have time to grab a short nap after the meal...
