Jeyme

Jeyme

"Come in." J'nus looked up from the records in his hand as the greenrider, Jeyme, entered. She'd come recommended by Kapera, and apparently had been a greenrider at Dolphin Cove as well as Far Island. Jeyme turned out to be a rather elegant looking young woman with dark hair and startlingly green eyes. He set the records aside and gestured for her to sit. "Thank you for coming, Jeyme."

"Of course, sir," Jeyme said, tucking her hair smartly behind her ears as she took a seat.

"I hear that you are interested in the Wingthird position with Skybroom Wing."

"Well, I initially accepted Kapera's offer as her Wingthird, but she mentioned to me that you might be needing a wingthird and I have experience flying in the mid-to-high altitudes." Jeyme explained.

"Kapera knows her riders well." J'nus studied her for a moment. "This is as much me interviewing you as you interviewing me. I want a Wingthird that I can work with, and I won't be offended if you decide that you'd rather fly with Kapera. But, as a place to start, can you tell me about your experience leading riders in Threadfall?"

"When I was K'ran's wingthird, I was in charge of the midfall transition of green and blue riders." Jeyme explained.

"What was the easiest part of that, and the most difficult?" J'nus asked.

"Threadfall was actually the easier part of being a Wingthird. Rapids had more trouble with interpersonal relationships on the ground because of the mix of Dolphin Cove and River Bluff riders. That was the most difficult part. Having authority challenged because of which Weyr we were from."

J'nus nodded. Perceptions of who belonged were common with transfers, and transfering a whole Wing had been traumatic for everyone involved. "How did you approach that issue?"

"Under K'ran's guidance, we began partnering riders from different Weyrs for duties together, and then we also did some team building exercises each sevenday."

"What sort of team building exercises?" J'nus asked curiously.

"One of the things he had us do was the catch and rescue drills." There was nothing that said trust like throwing yourself off your dragon and hoping your wingmate did their job and caught you. Of course there were always safety ropes attached but hitting the bottom of the rope and dangling in the air was not fun.

"Did increasing catch and rescue drills had an impact on the Wing's cohesion, do you think?"

"There really wasn't enough time to tell, honestly," Jeyme admitted. "Meetings and production on Barrier Lake began and that sort of took over any sort of free time or conversation among the Wing."

"If Barrier Lake Weyr hadn't interrupted, in your opinion do you think that the additional catch and rescue drills would have made a difference?"

"I think if bonding drills like the catching drills had continued, it would have made a difference, yes. Sometimes people just need a common goal to learn how to be friends." Jeyme said.

"I think that's true, too. It's been interesting building a Wing from transfers. The group dynamics can be... interesting. But at least here, everyone starts on equal footing. Even those who were from River Bluff Weyr seem to feel like this is somewhere new." J'nus paused and looked down at his notes. "You Impressed at Dolphin Cove Weyr... if I remember rightly, I remember hearing that you and D'hol have a history. Will that be an issue?"

The corners of Jeyme's mouth twitched. How ironic it was that Kapera had helped end her weyrmating to D'hol, and now here was J'nus, asking her about her past dealings with the current Weyrleader. "We share a son. We are on good terms, so it will not be a problem."

"I didn't think so, but it's always good to ask. I'm sure you understand." J'nus paused. Jeyme's experience integrating wingriders from different Weyrs would be useful to him, and he trusted Kapera's advice. A Wingthird with more experience as a leader would be beneficial seeing as his Wingsecond, N'call, was still learning. N'call was smart, but having someone else on his leadership team with some experience under her belt would help to season his Wingsecond. There would be a time when they would need to step into his place, but between the two of them, J'nus could envision them leading his Wing successfully. "Jeyme, I'd like to officially offer you the Wingthird position with Skybroom Wing."

For the first time Jeyme really smiled, the action lighting up her face. "Thank you, Wingleader."

Her smile was infectious and J'nus couldn't help but smile back. "So that's a yes?"

"Absolutely. Yes." Jeyme had come so far from the little hold girl she had been when she had been taken on Search to Dolphin Cove. Now she was a seasoned greenrider, and a Wingthird again, and more than that, she was finally satisfied and comfortable with who she was and her place in the world.
