The midday heat at Dolphin Cove was intense. Jeath was lying on her
ledge. She had napped deeply. taking advantage of the sun hitting her
back to warm her up as well as warming the stone itself such that she
was warm all over. Now she awoke, heated in the blood from something
not just the sun. From a desire to rise. To mate. She stretched her
wings and bugled a long call as she looked out to see what males were
available. Then she dove downwards to blood a buck, tearing into it to
make a show of it to those who watched.

Irrkali was drinking a fruit juice while grading a lesson when she
felt it - a familiar wave of need coiling in her belly as in her mind
Jeath stirred awake, aching for the sky. She pushed aside the papers
to come back to and strode confidently out to the flight cots. There
were no men here she was particularly attached to yet, not with K'lvin
gone. She'd be happy to let Jeath decide.

K'lvin had finally managed a day away from Barrier Lake and his duties
as Weyrlingmaster so he could spend some time with Riveenata. His
original plan to compete against C'rin for her affections wasn't going
exactly as he had planned since most of his time was consumed with the
new Weyrling's from Riyanth's clutch.

"Alright, go find somewhere to sun while I -"

}:I have a better idea. Jeath rises!:{ Xmrenth said with intense
excitement.

K'lvin's heart dropped. **Xmrenth! I came here to see Riveenata! Not
so you could fly a green!**

}:You can see her afterwards. You'd better climb back on if you want a
ride to the flight rooms.:{ the bronze warned.

Cursing under his breath, K'lvin climbed back on his dragon, and then
quickly removed his lifemate's straps once he was dropped off by the
flight rooms.

}: Jeath rises.:{ Zith looked down at the feeding pens with interest,
his talons kneading the ledge as he looked down at the feeding green.

Below, J'ackt put down his practice blade just as he'd been about to
start the round of sparring. His jaw clenched as he began the familiar
mental tug of war **No, Zith. Don't chase.** Determined, J'ackt
applied pressure to pull Zith away from his entrancement with the
green.

The big bronze fought against the mental demand; he'd been pulled from
three flights only recently, and the pressure to chase and mate had
only been strengthened. With a mental twist, he pulled free and bugled
his intent, winging down to watch Jeath }: I chase! :{

A third bronze joined them, this one older, his hide marked by faded
scars, but Isarth was not in the least put off by the presence of
younger challengers. He felt his rider's growing interest and
encouragement as M'gan hurried over to join the group of men surrounding
the greenrider. He had won many lovely greens at his former Weyr, and he
intended to prove himself here by catching the enticing Jeath. He
crouched, ready to spring into the air the moment she took flight.

Calaroth made his intentions clear, eyes whirling with lust as he took
a spot overlooking the feeding pens. The presence of the much larger
bronzes didn't bother him in the least. He was much faster and more
agile, a better match for a wily older green. And speaking of older...
T'lin eyed the green's rider with curiosity. Older women could be a
lot of fun.

}:Jeath rises. I will have her!:{ Xemroth bugled a challenge to the
other males as he watched the glowing female. So lovely. Yes, she
would be his!

Z'ku was somewhat less enthusiastic at the prospect of being with a
woman more than twice his age, but he'd been a rider long enough to
accept it as a fact of weyrlife.

Two wherries were struck down for blood, the first one having been a
slow juvenile, the second a fatter buck. Jeath sucked the blood
greedily, and dropped the bodies. Her head swiveled as she looked at her
challengers and hissed at them, finding the males far too close to her
for comfort. She needed the skies, not the ground!

With her blooding done, Jeath leapt into the air, calling another
challenge. She headed along the ribbon of beach sand, aiming downwards
on a path that would take them past the Dolphin Hall if she didn't
swerve.

Xmrenth was happy to follow Jeath anywhere that she led, if only that
confounded... blue... dragon.... The bronze snarled as a lithe, veteran
blue came whirling past him in a fancy display of aerobatics. Surging
forward, Xmrenth returned his focus to Jeath, knowing that he wouldn't
be able to use agility to win, the bronze turned to charm instead.
}:Come fly with me, Jeath. I have flown you well before,:{ he said
enticingly.

Isarth flew steadily, with only a twitch of his tail to show his
annoyance as a smaller dragon slipped past him through a gap in the
pack. He'd rely on his strength, choosing that vital moment when the
green began to tire to surge forward and claim her before she could
evade him. Only Xmrenth would have the experience to match his tactics,
the other bronzes looked young, and so he kept a close eye on the other
challenger as he followed Jeath onward in the chase.

Xemroth was displeased to have so many other bronzes around him. He
hissed and climbed higher to give himself room and allow a glimpse of
Jeath as she led the males along the coast. A beautiful, large green,
who was older and would have much experience. A mistake was unlikely,
so he must impress her with his power and size.

Calaroth was after her quickly, keeping pace with a few other swift
blues. He was ready to follow Jeath's twists and turns, desire driving
him to fly even faster, the tantalizing green so close and yet out of
his reach. }:We will fly well together. Let me show you!:{

Surrounded by males that matched his size and power, Zith too was
annoyed by the presence of smaller, more agile blues who were better
able to match Jeath's acrobatics. But he was younger than many of the
older bronzes, had more youthful vigor, and slipped between a pair to
call out to the flying green, shifting to allow the light of the
morning to sparkle across his unscored wings. }: I am strong and
young, I can fly high and far with you, beautiful Jeath! Let me twine
with you and I will carry you long and slow! :{

Jeath was an old and wily green who knew that the bronzes were slower
and could be out-turned but could last a long time, while the blues
could keep pace with her if she wasn't careful. Young dragons loved to
boast. And yet she was not entirely immune to the flattery of Zith and
Calaroth and Xemroth, young males who could promise her a good flight.
But there was also Xmrenth, who she knew well... and this stranger
Isarth. Well, she did not have to decide yet!

They had gotten used to her flying along the coast, so she ducked into
clouds and then re-emerged heading a different direction - aiming
suddenly inland.

Calaroth followed, swift and sleek, into the clouds and back out
again. He miscalculated slightly, coming out of the white haze farther
behind and to the left of Jeath, but he worked to catch up.

Xemroth held back when the clever green disappeared into the clouds
and then rushed forward when she appeared again, heading away from the
water. }:You shake off the less worthy. Now choose me!:{

Though he'd held back for this very reason, Isarth almost missed Jeath's
sudden turn entirely and growled in mixed surprise and admiration as he
pushed forward with a burst of strong wingbeats to make up the lost
ground. At this stage in the chase, he'd have to use all his wits to be
in with a chance of catching this clever green.

She led them a chase while she considered them, but soon her wings
tired. She made a snap turn around back towards the pack of males
behind her to surprise them. }:Catch me if you can,:{ she shouted.

The unexpected maneuver of someone coming _into_ the pack, not them
jostling each other around, made them break out and away, and cause
some males to drop out and away. But some responded by grabbing at the
glowing green prize. And one male's talons reached out and tangled
with her. Xemroth caught ahold of her. On the ground, Irrkali's hands
stretched out for his rider.

}:Yes, lovely one,:{ Xemroth said as he twined his neck with Jeath's.
As one with his dragon, Z'ku triumphantly claimed Irrkali, his earlier
hesitation buried under dragonlust.
