H'run

H'run

Hr'un shot to his feet the moment the woman on the sands said, "Wait!"

And then she Impressed a blue dragonet.

A _blue_ dragonet. **Impossible,** H'run thought. **Calcifeth!?**

}:That is Ishath,:{ Calcifeth replied. He sounded rather placid considering that history had just been made.

Or had it. H'run felt the blood drain from his face. History. History sometimes repeated itself, and there was rarely something new under the sun. Briefly he debated going to gawk at the new bluerider, or perhaps even speak with her, but she would be here later. Other harpers more talented with composition would write a song about it. He fully expected at least a dozen mediocre ones to be making the rounds within a sevenday. But he-- he was an Archivist.

The bluerider took off at a dead run for the Archives.

Was this a new phenomenon? Had it happened before? **Thank the Egg this happened at Dragonsfall Weyr,** he thought. The archives here were old and dated back to the Ninth Pass. They had census records that went back that far, too, listing the names of dragons and their riders. When the Tenth Pass began, they'd been used in aggregate to estimate the size of clutches and the number of dragons and support riders needed to staff the place. Genealogy was kept but nobody tended to look back that far anymore, not unless it was a gold or bronze bloodline. The ink was faded-- it was entirely possible that some bluerider on record didn't have an elided name and nobody in modern times had noticed.

Or songs-- history was often recorded in songs. Perhaps there were musical memories of female blueriders. Or perhaps female brownriders. Had women ridden bronze dragons? Had men ridden golden queens? What did it _mean_?!

There were too many questions. H'run took a deep breath and tried to focus his mind. What was the first step to solving this puzzle?

**Start with the earliest census records.** Despite his attempt at focus, questions swirled through his mind. Was the girl unique, or was something about her unique? What were the advantages of a woman riding a blue dragon? Could it happen again? If so, why? What did it _mean_?!

H'run crashed through the Archive doors and headed straight to Ashela's desk to shamelessly steal a sheaf of paper and a pen. She could yell at him for leaving a mess later. He then grabbed a glow basket and headed toward the oldest section of the Archives. The Feast forgotten, he began to paw through the Census records in search of answers to questions he hadn't known existed before tonight.

Somewhere there were answers, and he was determined to find them.
