Z'ku stepped into the office and saluted. "Bronzerider Z'ku reporting,
sir." He was maybe just a touch nervous about taking on the
responsibility, but for the most part he was thrilled. It took some
effort to keep his expression neutral.
"Take a seat," K'sedel gestured to the younger rider. "I understand M'gan
told you why you've been asked here today."
"Yes sir." Z'ku sat in the offered chair. "You'll be training me as a
temporary Wingsecond."
"That's right," K'sedel said. "As you know, this is an unusual situation,
with the Weyrwoman grounded for medical reasons, I'll be stepping up to lead
her wing in fall, and it currently lacks a 'second due to Kapera becoming
Weyrwoman at Barrier Lake. So there is now an opportunity to do something
slightly different and give people a chance to experience what it's like to
lead in a live situation that's not as controlled as a drills, but doesn't
have quite the danger of a high level wing."
Z'ku nodded. "I'm honored that I was chosen for this opportunity.
Xemroth and I will prove ourselves, sir." The bronze might be a little
overconfident and he would almost certainly try to show off, but Z'ku
had been restraining him since he was a hatchling.
"It isn't just what happens in the air though," some, although he suspected
not Z'ku, wanted the flashy knots and accolades without the work that came
with it. "There will be drills, wing meetings, and a taste of the hidework
that goes with the role. K'sedel watched the younger rider for a moment. "If
that's not to your taste, this is the time to back out, and we'll say no
more."
"I hope to fulfill as much of a true Wingsecond role as possible,"
Z'ku said. "As for hidework, before I was Searched I had a bit of
training in hold management. It's not quite the same, but there was
hidework involved in that. While I admit I don't particularly enjoy
it, I understand how important it is."
"That's a start," K'sedel began. "I'll ease you into it though."
"Whatever you think is best, sir," Z'ku said with a nod. He wanted to
take on everything now, but he also wanted to be successful at it.
"The first thing is this," K'sedel lifted a small stack of hides and passed
them to the younger man. There were some diagrams on the top sheet. "These
are the drills for tomorrow. They might not be so familiar to you as they
include riders who carry flame throwers. I'd like to you get your head
around them today, and we'll see how you go leading the second part, which
is on the third sheet, tomorrow."
Z'ku looked down at them with a mingled sense of nervousness and eager
anticipation. "Yes, sir."
"If you have any questions, you can speak to me, or to Irrkali," K'sedel
told him.
"Thank you, sir. I might have some after I read over these." Z'ku
nodded at the drill patterns. He would need to ask Pierka to watch the
children or pick them up from their foster mother later so he had time
to review them.
"Are there any other questions for me?" K'sedel asked.
"Not right now, sir."
"Then I'll let you go," K'sedel said. "You know where I am if you do think
of anything."
"Yes, sir." Z'ku stood and saluted. He and Xemroth were going to do
their absolute _best_ and make sure they didn't waste this
opportunity.
