Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 8, day 9 of Turn 10
Notes: Mentioned: N'call, Teseada
Ninaine wanted to pace in the Stands as the Candidates filed into the
cavern that reverberated with the dragons' hums. All around her she
could see hopeful faces, filled with the excitement of the Hatching,
but she felt far different as she waited for the Candidates to file
in. She may have been one of the few in the crowd that did _not_ want
her family member to Impress to a hatchlings in one of the rocking
eggs. **Please, just don't. Then you can go home. Be normal. Be
married. Be safe.**
She bit her lip as she watched the line of white-robed Candidates file
into the hatching grounds and form a semi-circle around the trembling
eggs. Her eyes found her little sister almost immediately. The silly
girl was nearly bouncing on her toes in excitement, and Ninaine felt
another surge of worry. As much as she loved her little sister, she
could scarcely imagine how Orifa would cope with another voice, an
immature hatchlings voice, in her head. How would she manage all of
the emotions? All of the needs from a hatchling? She was grateful that
their parents weren't here. Sweet Faranth, that was the last thing
Orifa needed. It was bad enough that she was here at all!
She should have asked N'call or even Teseada to come with her. Ninaine
found herself gnawing on a thumbnail as the first egg burst open.
**Not a green, not a green...** There was a surge of relief as her
eyes locked on her younger sister. **Please don't. Please don't.**
Orifa quivered with an excitement that she couldn't repress. The eggs
were beautiful and look! There was a brown! There was a blue! Was
there a dragon here for her? She couldn't think beyond, **Please, I'm
right here. Find me!** Her eyes closed tightly as she thought the same
thought over and over and over again.
}:Found you! Look! I'm right here! I am Lalorth! And I am Yours and
you are Mine! Hello? Open your eyes! I'm right here! Tada!!!!:{ A
gleeful high-pitched mental squeal of excitement answered the thought.
Orifa's eyes popped open as her jaw dropped in shock. Her eyes
immediately sought out the little shape of a small green, just burst
from her shell. Covered in egg goop and with a piece of shell stuck
directly on top of her head, the little green spread her wings and
attempted to hurry over to her chosen girl. She stumbled, falling
forward and burying her nose in the hot sand. }: OOOF! I'm stuck! :{
Her little wings flapped as she struggled to right herself.
Orifa rushed over to help Lalorth, her eyes shining with the immediate
love of the newly Impressed. "Oh goodness, hold on! I'm right here!
Let's get you straight! Oh, there's sand all over your nose. Let me
wipe it off..."
Ninaine groaned as Orifa rushed forward. "Oh no....no no no no no..."
But it was too late; she knew the moment that Orifa touched that
little green that it was far too late. Ninaine's shoulders slumped and
she felt tears well in her eyes. They weren't happy tears for her
sister's joy. There were tears of grief for what she knew her sister
would encounter, what she would have to do, the dangers she would have
to face and how she would now be completely abandoned and reviled by
their parents. Orifa didn't know the real consequences of what had
just happened.
Sighing and wiping her eyes, Ninaine stood and slipped out of the
Stands. She exhaled slowly and tried to arrange her expression to
something that was more encouraging than she felt, for her sister's
benefit. She couldn't change anything now; the best she could do is
help where she could. She just wished she knew how.
